Do any of you white tail hunters out there use Nosler ballistic tip bullets? I have always used Hornady BTSP with my 243 and 30.06 with good results but these 90 grain 243 gr Noslers shoot good out of my 243 and I wonder how they perform on deer.

I tried 165 gr. BT's out of a 30.06 S(hand loads) several years ago. Grouped great. Killed several deer with the load. Never failed to recover, but every very close shot ... the bullet always fragmented, with little penetration. Made a gaping, ham-burgered entrance wound and poor blood trail. Made for some tough tracking jobs. Once I was out of that box of bullets I went back to the Nosler Partition bullets. I have also had good results with Sierra Game Kings, but also have had a few (very few) shed their jacket on close shots - 50 yards or less.

No problems for this NBT shooter. Though one should realize these bullets are designed for longer range and thus over expansion at close range/high MV hits can result. This is not a failure but rather by design as they are intended to open up wound channels at longer range/slower MV's. "Match the hatch": pick the right bullet for the job! We have many bullets to chose from today so shouldn't be a difficult task. If not the failure rests with the shooter not the bullet...IMO!!

I'm a big BT fan but I don't shoot a 243.
That being said, I do know a guy who only shoots a 243 with Nosler BT's and thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I was thinking he uses a 95gr Nosler BT but it could be a 90gr.

As long as you shoot deer through the lungs the NBT is a wonderful choice for deer. The immediate expansion will do gratuitous damage to the vitals at most any range or velocity. Due to the fact that they are extremely cheap to reload and reliable I give them the nod.

A lung shot doesnt waste any edible meat. However a shoulder shot will destroy one or both shoulders. Like RR said stay back from the shoulder a bit and youll be just fine.

you are right ,the perfect shot is through both lungs but deer very seldom give u that perfect shot ..so why take a chance and use a fragmenting bullet ???????????
