No flat rule for every place
If you're in a place during gun season with the green leaves on the trees; its a solid tree area; and its warm, you're better off up in a tree stand. In such a place the deer can scent you a lot faster than you can see them.
In cold conditions, with the leaves off the trees, I usually hunted on the ground. Up in a tree in those conditions, you can sure catch more frigid wind. On private land, with some open area mixed with forested land, I might consider it. Wall to wall tree area; rarely in cold conditions.
