If your a really good hunter.....

If you hunt really good and always do heart shots, and rifle all you use. try trying a muzzle loader (muzzle loader "hunting term-Muzzy" is a very accurate weapon, with a sleek design,it has in old fashion flair to it. You have to put in the gunpowder and other stuff) there very fun and its a good experience.

While I hunt with several weapon types these days, I started out with a smokepole, and it's still my favorite tool. Mine is an inline, but I normally use it with a patched roundball since it's rate of twist allows it. The last deer I hit with it didn't make it past 40 yards.

cynikalHC 04-19-2010 10:08 AM

I have never shot a smokepole before but would love to try and take a deer with one. That, and a pistol are my next two quests to try and accomplish.

I bow hunt and then black powder hunt for the rest of our season. Shotgun only comes out to play for doves, skeet, and here recently spring gobbler.

Have 3 BP guns, have an old inline .50 that uses no. 11 caps (my first gun I ever bought myself.) Also have an older .45 cal inline taking 209 caps. I have taken many deer with both.

The newest gun to the collection is my Hawkens .50 cal. Bought the do-it-yourself kit early last year when hours were cut back at work so I would have something to keep me busy on days off. I have right at 40hrs of time into this gun. Had to give it character and my personal touch.

Made contact with a young buck 2nd day into to the woods last season, heart shot at 25 yards. I have a good amount of time making this gun and dialing it in. I call it "The Beauty and the Beast" ;)

Is it even legal to hunt deer with a pistol?

In Virginia it depends on the county your in. I wanted to try it out but you can only use pistol in counties your allowed to use modern rifles.

The best thing is. All the places seem to be all built up and has houses on top of each other in the places you can use rifle and pistol. :confused0024:

I live out in the sticks, way out in the sticks (takes 45 minutes to get a cop to you) can't use a rifle or pistol.

Ive owned a half dozen MLs, but after I bought my savage 10ml smokless, I never looked back. its a little more complicated than a regular ML ,but the 1st time I hunted w/ it, it rained really bad while I was on stand. as I was walking back to the truck, i could see the rain water pouring out of the breech. that night I went to discharge the load, but i was sure it would not go off, since I figure there was no way moisture didnt get into the breech. when it went bang! as soon as I pulled the trigger, I was amazed! this gun is also very accurate and powerful(250grxtp/2300fps) w/ less kick than other MLs ive owned. theres also no smoke cloud when I pull the trigger, and I only have to clean it once a year!

nchawkeye 04-19-2010 04:15 PM

I started hunting with a flintlock in 1977...I bought a .45 caliber custom made flinter when I lived in Atlanta...The builder ended up being one of the builders written up in Foxfire V...I killed 30 or so deer with it through the late 70s and through the 80s...

About 1986 I had an experience with a black bear on one of our farms and I decided I wanted a .54...After checking out how much it would cost to have one made I decided to do it myself...Fortunately I found a local guy that sold barrels, stock, locks and the hardware...I wanted a gun that could have been used in 1770 in the North Carolina area...

It took me 2 years to finish that rifle...I make my own patch lube, buy bulk pillow ticking for patching and mold my own balls...I've taken at least 40 deer with the .54...

I have since converted the .45 to a .40 and use it for small game...I also give talks to local schools and Boy Scouts on the American Revolution and Colonial Living in North Carolina...

btw...Daniel Boone moved to North Carolina in 1750 with his family when he was about 16...It was from here that he started his long hunts into Kentucky, the first in 1769 and it lasted 2 years...

You want reality??? How many of us could live in the woods for 2 years, much less dodge the Cherokees and Shawanees???

Here is the .40 caliber, loaded with 25grs of FFF it's deadly on squirrels...

Here is the .54...

Here I am showing some Boy Scouts how it's done...:)
This is at a camp near Charlotte...Bass Pro sponsers the event and we average 800 Scouts a year for the weekend...

SchuLace 04-20-2010 07:20 PM

I shot my first ML last weekend. It was pretty cool. In SD you cannot use smokeless powder and iron sights only. I like the rules like that because it keeps ML hunting from becoming too modern. It keeps it old fashioned like it should be.

Hunting Kuk 04-26-2010 02:11 PM

this year one of my dads frends at work let me borrow his ML its real nice but my hunt turned out with two..no three misses first two were to far the third i was rattled after the misses

IL-Cornfed 04-26-2010 03:38 PM

I'm not into that ol' Davey Crockett smoke pole BS, but a modern inline Muzzleloading Rifle is the only gun I use for big game these days. There are incredible and far more accurate that the shotgun slug guns and handguns that we have to use here in Illinois.

Myself and all 3 of my kids (ages 9, 10 & 14) all use T/C Encore Pro Hunter 209 x .50's topped with quality optics with BDC reticles. Shooting 250 gr Shockwaves, they hold super tight patterns past 200 yards.

Funny as heck you should say this, and then have what you have in your byline...:s1:

A true muzzleloader hunter doesn't need fancy gismos as he knows he can get closer to his quarry... :)

btw...He never went by Davy or Davey, only David...Walt Disney gave him the name Davy...

Just curious, Ive noticed you make alot of rude posts, why do you do that? Do you get off on insulting people or something?

2 Samuel 22:35 04-26-2010 07:03 PM

I have shot a muzzy but have never hunted with it.

camostream 04-29-2010 12:12 PM

I'd love to add a Muzzleloader to my collection but not sure I'd have the time to hunt the extra season. It would however make me think twice about my shots a little bit more. That now, would be a good thing.

Rhody Hunter 04-29-2010 12:31 PM

I'm suprised at the amout of people here that havn't try it. I am mostly a bow hunter but when i shoot a gun i prefer the muzzle loader. I only need the one shot. more accurate at longer distance than a shot gun. you concentrate on shot placement when a follow up shot is going to take you some time

Bucktail_Bob 04-29-2010 02:09 PM

I wacked this coyote last year with my smoke pole off hand at a good distance while trying to secure deer loins for the freezer.
Mr. Boone would have been impressed!
I also have a 10 ga. side by side muzzleloader shot gun that has been in the duck blind and turkey woods. A little more challenging than the modern tools offered today.

To me, that is a single shot rifle. If someone is going muzzleloader hunting, they are using an old timer and not using smokeless powder. That is just me.

You must posses the weapon legally of course, but, Rifle zone anything larger than .22 is legal, and in shotgun zone, has to be .35 w/ straight walled cartridge or bigger, no more than 9 rounds, including up the pipe.

The tc encore in the pic, does not use smokeless powder, it is a standard inline that utilizes black powder, and BP substitutes. The only production Muzzleloader, that shoots smokeless powder, is the savage 10ML. Although I find sidelocks and traditional BP shooting very cool and interesting, I do not shoot a muzzleloader to make my hunts more challenging, or for nostalgic reasons. I use my smokeless 10ML because I think it is the most effective weapon available, to use (where legal) during ML season. I also prefer it to a slug gun when hunting in areas where CF rifles are restricted.

tyeposey12 07-02-2010 02:37 PM

do yall have any tips about bowhunting ????

rustynobles 07-03-2010 06:59 PM

first off, try bowhunting. it's fun, super challenging, and will make you a better all around hunter. but once bow season is over i shoot a cva staghorn, that i swapped out the breech plug in. it's kinda like the first generation of inlines. i refuse to put a scope on it. i'm about the novelty and personal handicap of shooting with open sights. after ml season is over i shoot whichever rifle strikes my fancy on a given day (7mag, .243, 8mmMauser, .30-30). i did purchase a slug barrel for the 12 gauge last year, i may bust that out this year. whatever you're into, just do it balls to the wall while you can.
