Shooter bucks
To all those on here who practice QDM or are not allowed to shoot bucks unless they meet a certain criteria. What do you consider a shooter buck to be? I know it depends on several different things. I' m just courious in the differences between other places and here in eastern NC.
Here it would be a 6pt at least 15" wide....... well for me it would be |
RE: Shooter bucks
There are a few things that I consider before I consider a buck a shooter. It oftens depends on whether it is gun deer season, Bow season, Private land, Public land. During bow season I won' t take a buck less than 130" on the private land I hunt, but the public land I hunt I consider a 120" buck a trophy and a shooter with the bow.
Gun season I mainly hunt big woods of public land in Northern Wisconsin and will take a buck 8pts or better and at least a 17" spread. I do however " WHACK" the crap out of the does.:D |
RE: Shooter bucks
Well where i hunt here in Texas the rule is 130 or better,,,,but we also take alot of cull bucks when we don' t see any shooters

RE: Shooter bucks
I hunt public land.
I will not shoot smaller than eight points (unless there is something super about the rack) I try to judge 3-1/2 years and older. I am mainly looking for some mass if possible. Score is not as important as age to me. If my first one is a good one I will become more selective. |

RE: Shooter bucks
For me maturity is always a key element in determining what a shooter buck would be, I have often passed bucks that met my min. standard only due their potential and gene contribution to the herd. My min. standard is a 150 regardless of the weapon. I may take a mature deer that is in a downslide at the end of the season which doesn' t meet 150, just depends.

RE: Shooter bucks
I have to agree with rack, I' ll take a smaller racked buck if he' s over 5 years old it takes something special if he' s younger than that.
|
RE: Shooter bucks
The rack has got to be out beyond the ears in width, which I figure to be roughly 17 to 19 inches outside the spread. That will do here, unless we talk about height, then height of 12 to 14 inches really ads up. About 150 class!!

RE: Shooter bucks
We try to keep it limited to mature bucks. Last thing we want to shoot is a 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 year old basket buck.

RE: Shooter bucks
I don' t like to take a buck unless I think he will make 150 B&C
