which to buy?
I've been deer hunting for about 15yrs or so. I'm 26 now and I've always gun hunted. I've got two things that I would like to buy, but I don't know if I will be able to afford both. I've been thinking about buying my first bow and the other is a scouting camera.
I've never used either and the place we hunt at is just a few family members and none of us bow hunt so I will hunt by myself. I think I mainly would hunt mornings and not evenings if I bow hunted. Is a scouting camera something that is a good tool/source to have? Which would you buy if you were me. Thanks |
Thats a tough one. I know I would buy the Trail cam, but thats only because I already have a bow. YOu could always sart off with one of hte cheaper trail cams, so then maybe you could still afford to buy a bow, then down the road, you could buy a better camera. I will tell you tho, once you have had 1 trail cam for a while, you will want more.

trail cameras are fun, but not necessary at all, get a bow before a trail camera.
|
I know I love my bow... I have a couple of trail cameras and they sit there and collect dust.... the bow on the other hand rarely has time to relax....
|
I just started bowhunting 2 years ago,and I absolutly love it..I like bowhunting more than gun hunting now..I have trail cams now,but like already said, they are totally not necessary. They are fun,you can get a wildview ez cam for $59..I wouldn't reccomend paying over $100 on a camera if you think there is a possibility of it getting stolen..Get the bow,you won't regret it.

Well if you want to start bowhunting..... don't buy the camera first they can't shoot arrows.LOL.
No, seriously. I have 2 of the wildviews, 1 was a $50 and the other a $100 one. The 1st one takes better pics but the second one has time and date on it. You can always start with a good used bow. I am not trying to sell you one but just as an example i am selling one of my old ones for $125. bow, quiver, rest, sights and arrows. Check out craigs list where ever you live and you can find those deals. Good luck. |
by a bow then buy a cuddeback camera dont waste money on a cheap buy 1 that will last so u do not have 2 spend a hundred dollars every 2 or 3 years. a camera will help learn wat deer u have size that is and also help learn the patterns. but is no good if u do not hunt when they are in patterns which is bow season. bow first then camera... just my 2cents

Definitely a bow...no question on that one.

Get a good bow and a cheaper cam if you can to start off. Those cams have helped me decide what stand to hunt and when . very good tool, but cant kill deer without a bow
|
+ 1 for bow bring camera if you want a picture ! LOL !!!
|
Thanks. For a bow, I was looking at a couple. The Martin Cheetah or Bengal and the Parker Wildfire Extreme.
For the camera I was thinking the new 2010 Bushnell Trophy Cam. |
Hell, buy the camera now so you can get some use out of it this spring/summer scouting. Then save up a few months and go get the bow. If you are not going to have the money for a bow a couple months before opening day, I would get the bow now so you have time to practice.

I was in your shoes about a month ago. I'm 20 and have never bow hunted. I started looking and found myself a Mathews Drenalin. I was instantly hooked. I've just been able to shoot seeing as how season isn't in, and I already can't put the thing down. You'll love it bud. Do yourself the favor and go out and buy you a bow. set up cost is a little expensive, depending on what you buy. But you can shoot and shoot and shoot, and not spend a dollar. And you'll love it!!

If you decide on a trailcam You can buy a Wildview Xtreme 5 or a Moultrie D-40 for under $70.00 each when they go on sale and in my opinion they are the best cams for the money!! ( I own 7 of them and love them) I also own numerous more expensive cams, Cuddy, ScoutGuard, higher end Moultrie's and will never spend more than $70.00 on a cam again. Pike

If you want to learn HOW to hunt, buy a bow. If you have access to some dedicated bowhunters, you can learn a lot, make some good friends and have a lot of fun. And there is a lot more to do than hunting in the archery world. get the bow.:party0005:

Definitely the bow. You can't hunt with a trail camera.
In your journey to become a proficient bowhunter, you'll learn way more than you will from photographs. Learn to read sign and you'll never need a camera. There is a ton of free information on doing that on my website - the URL is in my signature. |
get the bow... you will have a new addiction!!!!

Buy them both.....buy a good used Bow for a lot less money and get a decent trail camera that will help you in seeing when and where the Deer travel on your hunting ground. You can try out Bow Hunting and if you stay with it buy a newer more expensive brand new Bow! ;)

If you really enjoy hunting, buy the bow. It will give you through to the fall to get practiced up with it at the range and with field shooting. Obviously to be truly proficient takes alot more time than a sight in session with a gun. Cameras are a neat accessory, but it doesnt replace smart scouting.

Get the bow. I recently bought a bow and just finally got around to shooting it. It is fun to go outside for a while and shoot. It gives me something to do when I get bored. Really can't do that with a camera. You don't NEED a camera to hunt. You need a bow to hunt.

CAUTION: ARCHERY CAN CONSUME YOUR LIFE AS YOU KNOW IT!!!!
Hunting seasons in spring and fall--up to 120 days worth!! Target and 3D shoots from December to September, two on the same weekend if they are close enough together, sometimes even when they aren't really. Some great excuses to travel to some weird places you would never otherwise go in a million years. Tons of new toys to buy, cuz they are better. Tens of thousands of arrows to be shot in a year for practice to be able to hit dimes at any range without a rangefinder (but you will own one) Strings and cables to be changed because yours are worn out or have stretched .001" About a million types of arrow and broadhead and fletch and fieldpoint and nock types to try, cuz the newest one is better. Treestands, ropes, hooks, climbing pegs, climbing stands, boot muffs, Scentlok clothing in every camo pattern imaginable. Did I mention the women? the Form!!!! Plenty of "archery" politics to discuss (argue), equipt discussions(ARGUMENTS),people of all sorts, kind of a strange bunch, they are all addicts( Most come across as relatively sane, but, there is always that question???) YOU"VE BEEN WARNED!!!!! |
