Meat and Potatoes .308 ammo

I'm shooting a Sako .308 and have been using Rem 150gr Core-Lokt ammo exclusively. No real complaints, price is good and it puts the deer down, but I am not 100% happy with my accuracy.

I know that the best ammo is the ammo that your gun shoots well, but would like some suggestions on what other non-premium hunting ammo to try.

Of course, this is assuming I can even find the ammo at a store or online (what is up with .308 ammo being so scarce?).

Thanks

Back when I shot a .308, I got good accuracy from the 165 gr fusions. I also like cheap winchester powerpoints. I haven't seen many guns that don't shoot a sierra gameking or nosler balistic tip well, but they may be more than you want to spend

I used Fusions in 180gr for 30-06 and liked the bullet weight retention at a relatively low price. Not as low as Core-Lokts but less expensive than premium ammo.

I have shot Federals 180 grain with good end results and good accuracy (I forget the exact round, but It is the basic economy round they sold). I only stopped using it when I started reloading for .308.

I shot Hornady SST 130 grain custom in my Howa 308. I shot half inch groups at 100 yards. The knock down power is outstanding. They cost from 30 to 35 dollars a box depending on who you buy them from. I will never use another load.

I've always shot 150gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertips out of my Tikka 308, for deer. I shot a 165gr. Speer Nitrex this year on a bear, and it worked out very well also. The sivertips always shoot under an inch out of my rifle. I didnt get a chance to group the Nitrex, just shot 2 at 25 yards before the bear hunt. It was the same hole, but at 25 yds I think most rounds will do that.

Your 3 basic rounds will be the Remington CoreLokts, the Winchester PowerPoints and the Federal Classics in Speer HotCores...All are your standard cup and core type soft point bullets...You should be able to buy them for $15-$20 a box...

I've killed deer dead with every one of these in my .243...In fact, when I find a box for $18 or less I pick up a few...

I'd try the Winchester and Federals as well...

I also rely on Rem. 150 gr. Core-Lokt's in my Sako. The Hornady SST in 150 gr. would be my choice if I were to use another factory load for the 308 that is a more accurate.

My preference also.

Thanks for the advice. I'll plan on trying the Win power points and the fusions, assuming I can find them.
