New Rifle
Im going to buy a new rifle tomorrow, any recommendations?
Looking at a rem. 700. What do you think? |
You're just...going out to buy a new rifle? How did you settle on the Rem 700?
Oh and, eh...308. :) |
T/C Encore or Browning A-bolt
|
I love my model 700 xcr. Go for it!
|
Ruger M77 MKII 7mm Mag.
Browning A-bolt 7mm Mag |
T/C encore love mine. I have a 7mm08, a 308, 20 guage 50cal, getting ready to buy another barrle a 17 i think or a 223
|
I was thinking about the encore but arent the barrels pretty expensive?
|
My Rem 700 in .270 cal is about 43 years old, and if I had to buy another rifle tomorrow it would be the same type rifle. Make sure to budget in $300 or so for a quality scope. Don't buy the combo package that some companies offer, the combo scopes aren't worth mounting usually, IMHO.
|
thats what I was thinking about getting timber.. my dads friend can get me a leupold for 225 so I think im gonna buy one off of him. How heavy is the 700?
|
I couldn't exactly tell you the weight, with scope is. I got my grandson one last Christmas, synthetic, camo with a Bushnell Elite 4200 scope and it is a great shooting rifle, probably about 8.5 pounds or so. I think the rifle was about $503 at Wal Mart.
|
you got the combo or the scope separately?
|
Love my 700s. As soon as I got familiar with them back in the day, I got rid of every single Ruger I had. I still miss the .260, but have it in the 700. There are several 700 models to choose from. Get one that fits your needs and never look back! I have an Encore and am not too impressed, but it's a nice rifle regardless. The barrels vary in price from around $225-$285(approx.) and can get them cheaper off the net and classified forums. My favorite 700 is the .260, but I like the .270 as well.

I love my .700. I have one in .30-06 right now. But will be adding something else in remy 700 this spring. Great shooting, reliable. Did I mention it just flat out shoots great? Classy look to it too.
Good luck and post pics when you get it! -Jake |
If I was set on a Remington 700 I'd get a older one. Certainly wouldn't want one of the ones made in the last few years. Read up on all the problems people have with newer Remington stuff.
If you want a good bolt action rifle though I think both the Savage model 10 and the Browning A Bolt are much much better choices. |
man this is tough lol.. ive shot the Browning A Bolt before and I really like it, but ive also heard a lot of good things about the 700. I cant decide between the two. Guess ill have to just decide tomorrow when im lookin at them.
|
Look at savage, there dead on accurate right out of the box, and they come with a scope already on them.
Thats what I would get. JMHO |
I have a 700 SPS DM in .243 and might be my most accurate rifle.
Also own; Marlin, Savage, Sako & Browning |
I took a good look at the new Winchester 70 last week. It has been getting great write ups, has fantastic fit and finish, smooth as glass action, about 700.0 at the local Bass Pro shop. I had been looking for a new bolt gun, and that was head over heals the gun for the money I found.

It will be expensive when you first start out but i started with the 50 cal. I had 10 weapons stolen so I had to start over. So I said lets go the T/C encore. I will replace one out of the group and that is my Remington pump 30-06. but it wont be the same as the original. That Original Killed My biggest buck. Search before you buy, with the economy there are some great deals out the. |

As already mentioned, Savage, T/C (Icon, check out the new Venture as well), Browning, etc... |
I love my Browning A-bolt, .270wsm.
|
well im kinda disappointed, I have to wait till monday to order my rifle. I have to get it from dicks because my grandmother gave me a 400 dollar gift card to there for christmas, which will help out a lot. I went today and they said they can only order guns on the weekdays so I guess ill have to wait till monday. Im gonna go with the Remington 700 sps .270 maybe stainless
|
i like my mossberg 4x4 rifle
|
I bought a new 700BDL last in .243 cal. I shot a 700 in .270 cal for about 35 years and just got tired of the kick and decided I wanted something else. You will love your new gun and by the way, there is nothing wrong with the new 700s.
|
I have 7 700's and one 700 ML, You will not be dissapointed.
|
You wont be disappointed with your 270. I love mine lays the deer out every time.
|
Paintball,
Go for the stainless and you will never need to look back !!! Now spend some money on good scope and you will be set for a lifetime. |
We have a 700 BDL .270 in the safe. My 5'3" 130 lb g/f uses it. She often shoots it from the bench, and I have never heard her complain about recoil. The .270 is a rather mild recoiling caliber, and LOL I am not inclined to load light loads.
|
700's are great rifles whether they are new or old. I bought this one in 270 Win a couple years ago and it has been a fantastic rifle. It started life as a CDL but now wears a Remington laminate. It feels right in my hands, is accurate, and the fit and finish was excellent.

I can't even believe that after holding the Browning you are going to go with the Remington. There is no comparison between them Browning is a top quality made firearm where the Remington is a mass produced good but not top quality firearm. If you have a choice I believe I would look at the two again. The reason you are getting so many reports is that most folks won't, can't spend the money so they settle for second best. again if you can compare the two guns again. The Browning you will pass down to your children and their children. I have 2 that were my grand dads. And 4 I bought myself. The Cal. is a personal choice.
|
I would get the stainless for sure...good luck with your new rifle, they are very nice and will serve you well.
|
There are variations in Remington 700's...some are cheaply priced, others are expensive. I have heard good and bad reports on Brownings and on Remingtons...both are good, get what feels right and fits your budget right and don't worry about it or what anyone else says.
|
Ruger M77, and caliber will do. Great model right there.

This is one of the more comical posts I have read in quite some time.:D The "feel" of a firearm is subjective. Obviously you have not priced very many Remingtons. If you had, you'd know they are very proud of the BDL's, CDL's, Sendero's, and Mountain Rifles just to name a few. |
I have owned over a couple dozen hunting rifles in the past 10 years, and my newer production 700 mt rifle, in 7-08, is by far my favorite yet. I will never get rid of it. It shoots, carrys and looks great. I bought a stainless SPS, in 7mag too, last year. Decided i didnt need it, but for the money, it was a great rifle. Better fit and finish than savage, and on par w/ browning IMHO.

thanks for all the comments yall.
Sheridan- Is the stainless matte? because I dont want somethin thats gonna be reflecting sunlight in the woods. |
I have a Rem. 700 bdl .270, a Ruger M77 .270, a Win. model 100 .308, and a Browning A-Bolt .270 WSM. My favorite is the Browning. If you are sooting longer distances, I would say try a WSM. If most of your shots will be 200 yards or less, then I would probably stay away from one. They are a little more expensive and the ammo is more expensive. They shoot extremely flat. I killed a buck this season at 426 yards. The bullet drop was only about 6 or 7 inches. I'm not going to try and talk you out of the Remington. I like Remington and have killed many deer with my 700.
|
The stainless is "matte"..................most are nowadays.
