Can anyone offer advice to a new New Jersey hunter?

Good evening folks:

I have been hunting a number of years in NY and a friend of mine moved to New Jersey last year so we decide to try hunting some of the state lands in NJ. We are hunting Assunpink State Park and have not been very successful. A few of the locals told us to use corn, which is allowed in NJ. We are hunting the winter bow season and just put our corn piles out three days ago. We went this afternoon to hunt the second half of the day and noticed our corn was not touched at all. I know we have to wait for some deer to discover the corn. But does anyone know how long bait piles should be left out before you should try another spot?

Also, does anyone have any advice for Assunpink Stae Park or know of any other good State lands in NJ?

Thanks!

Sorry as this is not what you requested, but I suggest drop the baiting for now and scout more. Scouting tells you where the deer are.... NOW! It reveals bedding areas, feeding areas, trails between each and where the deer seem to be spending most of their time. It can show you what they are eating, how they are getting there and bedding areas... and "how" they are getting there! It can also show you if there is a big buck around or if the area is more a doe group area, etc.

Plan an ambush based on these findings and you'll do better than any corn pile can produce, in so far as activity.

You'll also learn about the area more and maybe how other hunters are using it and approaching it. These are important to know too so you can plan for that as well.

Good luck,

Once a good area is located, a pile of corn probably wouldn't hurt! :)
