Hunting in the Snow

I was planning on hunting saturday but it is calling for over 10 inches of snow on fri night-saturday. Since we dont get much snow where I live usually, im not that experienced in it. I want to know if deer will move when it is snowing hard because it is calling for it all day on saturday.

Thanks yall

i have had luck the few time we have had snow in NJ, also it makes tracking, and scouting a lot easier

bowtech 300 12-17-2009 01:45 PM

Hunting in the snow is the best. The Deer show up visually at very long distances. You can watch them forever. As far as heavy snow I would go for it. In past years I have taken Deer in all kinds of nasty weather. Tracking in the snow is the one of the things I really enjoy. They can't get away.Last weekend it was 8 degrees when I went out with 4 fresh inches of snow, I saw 23 Deer and took a nice Doe.

Get out there! it snows all the time here in maine and we do fine. I find that deer actually like to move in a snowstorm as long as its not too windy. Try cutting a track and chasing it like they used to back in the old days. where quiet clothing and keep your eyes off the ground. As hard as it is to not stare at the track keep your eyes scanning in every direction cause they like to circle around once they know their being followed.Good luck

mnprohunter 12-17-2009 02:55 PM

Usually the day before it snows big and the next couple days after the storm passes are really good.

llpaintball 12-17-2009 02:56 PM

thanks Maine... now hopefully my truck will be able to make it to my place. The forecast keeps rising every few hours

heinz57 12-17-2009 03:02 PM

don't go hunting in the snow ...too easy finding the deer ,too easy dragging it on the snow ,but i enjoy it ..

llpaintball 12-17-2009 04:55 PM

putt46 12-17-2009 06:29 PM

121553 12-17-2009 06:32 PM

Good gosh I love hunting in the snow. The worst the better sometimes. The first snow of the year though the deer don't move as much and seem to lay up a bit longer, but then they seem to get accustom to it and thats when the detective work gets easy. Bring it on. :deer: It must be tough hunting on corn flakes. (dried leaves)

I'll be on the Potomac waterfowl hunting saturday morning, and then heading out to deer hunt in Montgomery COunty Maryland.

Gonna hunt Rappahanock County, VA on Monday. Hope to see good sign in the snow.
ANd its VERY easy to track blood in the snow.

Remnard 12-18-2009 04:47 AM

Hunting in the snow is the best, before during and after!

hubby11 12-18-2009 04:54 AM

I'm in VA as well. Can't get out on Sat but will hit some areas Mon and Tues. The snow will still be pretty good.

If you are hunting public land on Sat, be careful! With all this snow, up here in Northern VA, my guess is every yahoo with a gun is going to be crawling around the public land on Saturday. It's bad enough that I won't even consider going out to the WMAs on a Saturday.

Be safe, wear LOTS of orange.

I would have to say not all snow is wonderful. I found that out the first Saturday of rifle season. This was a wet snow with temps around freezing. It stuck to all the trees and brush and made visibilty little and very difficult. It was also slightly foggy and with the breeze and snow falling my group packed it in. We were putting on drives and found it pointless cause we just couldn't see. Now if it was a cold fluffy snow it would be a lot better.

got out this morning, didnt see anything. goin back in around 2

7.62NATO 12-18-2009 08:30 AM

Whoops!! Sorry for duplicating your thread!!

scribbler444 12-18-2009 08:38 AM

thats such a stupid law you cant hunt on sunday

Saxman1819 12-18-2009 08:41 AM

I was going to hunt in Howard County Maryland on Saturday but they're calling for 20mph sustained winds. I'm NOT going out in that. I'll just take off Monday. If it were just going to snow its butt off I'd be out there but with the wind...forget it. With the wind it's a lost cause IMO.

llpaintball 12-18-2009 08:43 AM

its alright, and yea I agree.. I wont hunt if its too windy

7.62NATO 12-18-2009 11:33 AM

llpaintball, where are you in VA? I'm in Chesterfield Co.

UncleNorby 12-18-2009 12:39 PM

If your hunting spot will allow you to walk around, hunting on snowy windy days is hard to beat. There's more to hunting than sitting in a stand.

Champlain Islander 12-18-2009 01:20 PM

It is always good in the snow. Tracking that big buck down if you are in a large piece of woods is the best.

jepcho 12-18-2009 01:52 PM

I have found that when hunting while its snowing, you can spot and stalk deer very effectively. They are easy to spot and its quieter walking and they have trouble seeing you, because there is so much other movement from the falling snow. Get out there and good luck!

BigBuck95 12-18-2009 02:03 PM

Walk around and still hunt til you find a track and just follow the track. If it's snowing and theres little snow in the track, it's a fairly fresh, but that will also depend on how hard the snow is falling. Find a fresh track and follow it til you find the animal that made it. Best of luck. :guiness:

I REALLY want to go hunting tomorow. But there is NO way I could possibly get to where I'm hunting in 16 inches of snow. Just not possible. Why so much? I'd be satisfied with 5-7 inches.

Eagles22793 12-18-2009 02:51 PM

will the deer be in the woods or will they go out into fields for feeding like they usally do

llpaintball 12-18-2009 05:13 PM

im from Page County, but yea there is no way in hell I can hunt tomorrow calling for anywhere from 18-24 inches of snow. My truck wont make it :nonono2:

121553 12-18-2009 09:01 PM

Hell, we call that a skiff. You va. boys ever heard of a set of tire chains?
