Thick timber is a good bet if their are stll acorns if not find a food source post rut a buck will be looking for any and all food to build up fat before the bad part of winter.

good luck at him

Yea thats what I have been doing, but im having a hard time trying to find food sources. Theres a small field, but I have never seen deer in it

How big is your property? Just cause no one else hunts it (that you know of) doesn't mean he hasn't left it to chase a doe or food.

llpaintball 12-16-2009 06:01 PM

I would say 200 acres

That's why you hunt with other people. Find out where they are going and use them to your advantage. Greed will only result in failure!

He's with the does.........

Find the thickest thicket on the property, find a tree to set "up" in, and there is probably going to be only one tree suitable for a treestand........Get in at about two O'clock. They'll be by you at 4:45.

Make sure you take pics of that big O'l boy and share, then call the taxidermist........

Food food food

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 06:18 PM

O' your in Page? I'm in Stafford......... I could come out and scare him to you. Or let you use a treestand? I'll put some doe scent out and get every buck in there from a five mile radius!

Dave, I am the only one who hunts that property because I dont own it. Its my cousin's property and he has to give permission to people, im just the only one who has asked to hunt it I guess. But are you saying to set up a stand inside the thicket, because I have a stand right beside it and ive been in it hoping he'd come out but he hasnt so far

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 06:30 PM

Yes, that's it. You just need to spend time in your stand. That's it. I like the evening hunt, they usually move right at sunset and you have a halfhour after that. If you don't see him right after sunset you probably will not. Man you should take a friend with you, with your cousins permission ofcourse, we have a good cold front moving into the area now. You see now the BIG bucks will not move unless it's cold because they overheat. There moving now, but I always opt for the evening hunt so I don't scare them in the morning. Do you need a hunting buddy?

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 06:33 PM

You should move your stand or stay mobile. How come you did not take the shot when you had the oppertunity. You usually only get one chance but I'm sure there is more than one buck in your location...

I would have to get permission from him but that would be real cool, Im hoping we get this snowstorm theyre calling for on friday night. Im just worried about putting up a stand in that thicket and causing too much comotion and running them all out. Could I sit on the ground? Where do you hunt in Stafford?

llpaintball 12-16-2009 06:43 PM

Ive seen him twice once he saw me when I was walking out for lunch and I could see his rack as he was running away and the next I saw him walk out then he disappeared in the thick stuff.. maybe I just have bad luck haha

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 06:50 PM

O.K., I don't hunt in Stafford. I have permission to hunt in Orange. The guys really hit'em hard. Not as bad as the cars did in Oct. though. I would LOVE to hook up with you to hunt. NOT broke back mountain though, I'm married. You are soooooooo close to getting him.

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 06:54 PM

Darn dude. Your done. Only a two week season, whats up with that?

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 06:55 PM

You know I've never harvested a Bear. Have you seen any of them around?

llpaintball 12-16-2009 06:59 PM

hahaha.. yea its late muzzleloader now, how long is firearms there? And im not sure if there are any bear. My cousin did kill one on the property back in the day though.

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 07:00 PM

O' I got my muzzleloader dialed in!

Big Buck Dave 12-16-2009 07:06 PM

Where lighten' up either sex until Jan. second. I'm spinnen' a .243, but now you got me thinking of breaking out the BP....

countertop 12-16-2009 08:48 PM

they usually move right at sunset and you have a halfhour after that
Thats it exactly. I got out last night at 4:00. At 4:30 I had two groups of 3 does come by. At 4:50 I had a buck come trailing and I took him at 5:10.

That was in Rappahanock.

Hunt the evening. But you got to get out, if your not out, your not getting them.

llpaintball 12-16-2009 08:51 PM

oh believe me I will be out there, and I have been. Im gonna get him
