Hunt alone ?

This question is just idle curiosity. In spite of everything we've been taught in terms of safety and common sense, how many of you hunt alone ? The reasons you hunt alone may be many and are not important. This includes small game, big game, upland, etc.

Vast majority of my deer hunting is solo.

firebox48 12-15-2009 03:36 AM

tcba1987 12-15-2009 04:14 AM

wvnimrod 12-15-2009 05:11 AM

I hunt alone most of the time, but I always make sure someone knows where I will be and when I should return and I carry my cell phone with me just in case, and I always keep it on me not in my pack if you were to have a fall your phone isn't any good if its in your pack in the tree if your on the ground! Just make it a safe one so you can hunt tommorow!

Father Forkhorn 12-15-2009 05:18 AM

Normally alone. I did hunt openiong day with an acquaintance this year. Sometimes it's nice to have a companion. didn't see a thing, though.

Nice caveat to the story is that my companion was after his first deer and was all worried about how to field dress. I told him to give me a call if he got one and I'd come out and help him. Sure enough, about sunset the next day, I get a phone call and an excited voice shouts "I got an eight an point buck!"--I could barely understand what he said, he was so pumped.

Went out and discovered a very happy dude with a big-bodied eight pointer with about a 130 class rack. Perfect symmetry and excellent mass. A very eye-appealing
set of antlers. I walked him through the field dressing, loaded him up, and that was that.

It was really cool getting to be a part of that man's experience.

Before this season (and a few seasons off) I always hunted on a big ranch with alot of friends, family, and employees. I almost always sat in my stand alone but everyone knew where it was and we had good cell phone coverage out there. If I had a downed animal, I could call but I'd generally go in to get some food and come back out for search....camp was about 10 min away.

Now, the front gate of my ranch is 9 miles from my house. My wife always knows when I'm headed out and this season, I usually take my 8 year old daughter with me, though this time of year with school activities and parties, she's missed a few hunts. Again, its close to town so decent phone coverage.

Whether its hunting, scouting or just plain exploring, I think the only thing to be really concerned about is turning an ankle and having trouble getting back to the truck or something. Gun safety, of course but that's pretty universal. I also have a buddy bow hunting on the other side of the ranch I can call in a pinch.

HuntingKS 12-15-2009 06:58 AM

I've done both, but I prefer hunting alone. That way, I can do things on my terms. Come and go when I want to, stay out as long as I want to, and it's less noise and movement with one person. I generally like to stay out longer than most. So, I like going alone.

Krypt Keeper 12-15-2009 07:04 AM

I have mostly hunted solo most my life. This is the 3rd yr I am taking my nephew along and trying to teach alot of stuff. He is 18 now and we are seperated by 200 yards or so. Biggest problem is keeping him in the freaking stand, I have heard every excuse of why he walked out to the truck early.

I have shot 3 deer this season all when I was solo... starting to think he is bad luck.

bowfly 12-15-2009 07:05 AM

i almost always hunt alone, but always let at least two people know where i am at...in case someone heads out to the store, or something comes up...i find it good practice to have friend #1 call friend #2 and say "hey, is bowfly back yet from the creek stand?"

it is even better when friend #2 says "yes, but he came back to get the atv to drag the buck out" :D :D

PAThwacker 12-15-2009 07:24 AM

Solo Archery, gun hunt with my 58 year old father w/dissabilities. I prefer to hunt on my own terms during archery, letting my friends, father, and wife know where and when I should be out. I hunt in poor cell phone coverage (good texting) in northeast PA, and park my truck approved parking areas. I let them know if they don't see or hear from me by 9pm (archery) 7pm(rifle) they'll need to mobilize.
Texting status updates to FB helps too.

skiking 12-15-2009 08:14 AM

I almost always hunt alone, nobody to whine and complain about going over the next ridge, talk me out of shooting something across a canyon, make noise, or get fidgety.

Hunter2039 12-15-2009 08:52 AM

I hunt alone but sometimes for old times sake i hunt with my dad.

Jimmy S 12-15-2009 09:07 AM

Most of my time is spent hunting with my sons and a few buddys. We all hunt dark 'til dark and mostly from treestands. There are always times during the deer season when I hunt alone because of the schedule of the other guys. I drive over a mile to where we hunt and need 4WD just to get in. Then it's about a 30-40 min walk to where I will setup and usually in the dark. I will spend all day and return to the truck well after legal shooting has ended. My sons and friends are always aware when I do it alone and will always know exactly where I am. I quick phone call at the end of the day reassures everyone, I have arrived back at he truck safely.

They always hope I call early to let them know the days hunt ended successfully!

skb2706 12-15-2009 09:12 AM

I hunt family farm land and we may at times hunt alone but we're never very far from the farm house.

anglingarchitect 12-15-2009 09:40 AM

Most always alone, bow or gun, ground or tree! Cell phone but not good service!

This year I took my girlfriend to sit in the two person tower a few times with me she really enjoyed it. We saw some deer (does and spikes), a Bobcat, and one big bodied six point she wanted me to shoot (I passed on him and she couldn't figure that out).

She enjoyed seeing all the wildlife!

I made her freshen all my mock scrapes for me! LOL

young_bull44 12-15-2009 09:41 AM

I do a lot of hunting alone simply due to the conflicting schedules of my hunting partners and I.

BowHntrRick 12-15-2009 09:50 AM

I almost always hunt alone and it is a concern: I hunt on property I own in the country where cell covereage is non-existent except on the top of the hill. Since I am getting up there (51) and there is a family history of heart problems (my Dad had a heart attack at 59), I anticipate one day not too many years from now when it will be a hazard to hunt alone.

Of course, there is also the possibility of accident since I hunt from ladder stands and a climbing stand. However, I am very careful to use a safety harness and use common sense.

One thing that reassures me is the fact that I work hard to be in good shape: if I walk 10-15 miles a week around home it is less probable that a heart attack will take place when I am away on a hunt.

I also am careful to let my wife know when I will be hunting and where I expect to be. I call in at lunchtime to let her know all is well.

On the other hand, since I am self-employed and can choose my hunting trips to take advantage of weather and fewer other hunters (and no one else that I know is in the same circumstances), I plan to continue to hunt alone for the time being. Maybe someday a better phone or emergency alert device will be available.

KCbuckeye22 12-15-2009 10:01 AM

Archery Solo. Gun hunting with Family. Always with a cell phone and my wife knows where I'm at.

bryant1 12-15-2009 10:46 AM

I hunt alone when I hunt out of a stand, but keep in touch with all of my hunting friends through texts. There are plenty of hunting buddies and family that know where all my stands are if something ever went wrong.

englum_06 12-15-2009 12:24 PM

99% I go solo. Only been out MAYBE 2 times this year with someone else.

marshall9779 12-15-2009 12:33 PM

I hunt alone at least 85 percent of the time. So far 100% this year. I am new to MD as of 2 seasons ago and don't know a whole lot of people that hunt here, so I've hunted alone here in MD except for twice last year. I occasionally hunt at my parents in VA. I am in the tree by myself, but it's basically in their back year so I don't consider it being alone.

TRACKER 12-15-2009 01:43 PM

Mostly alone

I hunt abought 80% of the time alone .
I hunt with a group of other friends when I go downstate , and once in a while with my son of a buddy .
I really sent cautious so probably one of my main reasons for it , Also hunting pressure is a biggy in my book ...:deer:

BigBuck95 12-15-2009 01:47 PM

It sounds like most of the guys here hunt alone! I never hunt alone. For deer I am pretty much with my dad or some of our friends, or for turkey with my friend (who is a far better shot than I:sad0064:)

Tobe_B 12-15-2009 01:52 PM

I hunt deer alone almost all of the time.
I hunt pigs alone depending on what ranch I'm hunting, but I always let the closest person to where I'm gonna be know so that if they haven't heard from me then they can come looking. (I've got a record with gettin charged by the darn things)
And I always sheep hunt with my dad, mostly because it's all rugged canyons with no cell phone coverage and it just doesn't make sense for me to go alone especially when he wants to go along to.

Daveboone 12-15-2009 03:41 PM

Frequently alone, but I prefer company. My friends just are not able to get out on the spur of the moment like I can. It certainly affects whether I shoot at times..
I like to wander some big woods, and if I am by myself probably will not shoot a long way from the road. I try to make sure at least my wife knows the area I am in. (When I am alone, it is in area that I know very well, seldom hunted by others).

FLBandit 12-15-2009 03:56 PM

I always hunt alone. I tend to be a bit anti-social to begin with, and I like my solitude while in the woods. (Though on public land it can be hard to find) My wife knows about where I'm at should I be too late getting out.

IL-Cornfed 12-15-2009 04:15 PM

Mst of the time I have someone else hunting on our property as well. When I don't, a family member always knows where I'm hunting at,.... just in case.

WIbuckchaser 12-15-2009 04:29 PM

alone 80% of the time.

fishinty 12-15-2009 04:42 PM

I usually hunt alone, but my dad and my brother usually on the same property. just in case someone has an accident we all have walky talkies.

wis_rifle_hunter 12-15-2009 04:47 PM

i always hunt alone. after i turned 14 last year i've been hunting by myself ever since. i still use all the safety measures and common sense that my old man taught me. my brother just started hunting this year so now my dad has someone to hunt with

1shotkill1993 12-15-2009 05:23 PM

I hunt in the stand alone, but my dad is usually hunting too on the same property.

125py 12-15-2009 07:41 PM

about 1/2 by myself and 1/2 with my dad

I do hunt with a buddy sometimes, maybe 3 or 4 times a year.

putt46 12-16-2009 07:23 AM

I almost always hunt with the same buddy.
It's always fun to bust on him.
