Default 1 1/2 Hour Hunt

Dec. 2nd was the Kansas rifle season opener, My wife hasnt been able to hunt for a few years. I bought her a tag and license on Dec. 1st, a day she had to work,... she ended up putting in a 17 hour day in our local hospital. So she slept in for the opener morning hunt. I was home and picked her up around 3:15. We drove out to one of the properties we hunt with a stiff north west wind gusting to about 40mph. It was very cold with the wind chill. We had a short walk of about 350 yards and sat down to watch a feed field with the wind in our face.
About 4:15, I could see deer movement in the trees along the creek several hundred yards away. Both of us watched the bucks moving thru the trees, not being able to tell how big or small they were. About 4:30, I spotted a nice tall rack moving along the north edge and soon I could see his ears, then his complete head. He stopped to survey the field for a few moments then proceeded to walk out into the middle of the field. As he got closer, I could tell he appeared to be a 10 with a sticker or two, not real wide but very tall. We made the decision to shoot him and allowed him to get closer. When the buck was about 200 yards away, (man, I need a range finder) She squeezed the trigger on her .257 Roberts. The handloads I made for her consisted of 43 grains of IMR 4350 pushing a 117grain Hornady SST. The bullet caught him right below the heart. He wheeled around 180 degrees and really struggled to get far, He went about 80 yards and expired. The buck is very old, his teeth were ground down to the gum line. He weighed 260lbs on the hoof.

The buck turned out to be a 4 x 5 with a couple stickers. He boasts a score of 147,..... 7 of the 8 mass measurements were well over 4" each.

This weekend will find me guiding my daughter, wish us luck. She will be shooting the same gun.

Btw,...I have purchased a Browning Micro Adrenaline for my daughter, next season, I will have her bowhunting with me. Still working on my wife with that.
