If the wind isn't right, I don't hunt there and if the wind switches directions while I'm in a stand I get down and leave. It seems if a deer leaves the field because of an unusual sound they will often return. If they catch a whiff of your scent they won't be back any time soon.

Scent is the most important factor while deer hunting by far. I try to hunt the wind as much as I can, but as I have said before, wind direction can and does change. This is why I am going to be as scent free as possible, gun or bow hunting. Does it help? Hell yeah it helps. I have deer down wind of me all the time. Sometimes they catch my scent, but when they do, they don't go busting off in a mad dash. I've had mature does downwind of me many times this year and most of them did not wind me. Like someone said before, you can't eliminate your scent 100%, but every ounce of protection is worth the time.

A deer can smell you from a damned sight farther than they can hear you.

"A deer can smell you from a damned sight farther than they can hear you."

Not my experience.

I think scent is really a factor only in certain areas. If the deer are accustomed to human scent always being around, they don't fear it as much. I have put game cameras out and had nice bucks walk in right after I left. I do use some cover scent, wear rubber boots, and try to hunt the wind but with timber crews, hunters, and arrowhead hunters always in my lease I think the deer become accustom to human scent more than other areas I have hunted.

I could write for a while on the senses of deer, especially the deer's sense of smell.
I will simply say that any hunter that underestimates the deer's ability to smell you is breaking THE cardinal rule of hunting. The absolute biggest mistake a hunter can make.
