Like I said, I never looked at the teeth, and the head is at the taxidermist if he hasn't finished caping off the head and tossed it already. I'll have to give him a call and see if he still has it or not.

I would also say 2 1/2 but as usual, I may be wrong. I'm not up to speed on MD deer and growth rate.

A few years back I shot a beautiful NH 8 pointer that dressed at 178 pounds. When I registered this deer, a biologist from UNH was there working with the NH Fish and Game. He asked if I was going to mount the head. When I told him No, he asked to extract a tooth to determine his age. I agreed that was OK.

He cut the deer and pulled a tooth and told me my deer was only 1 1/2 yrs old. I told him I thought he was wrong simply due to the rack and body weight. He assured me it was very accurate. I was very suprised at hearing that. He showed me the tooth and explained the wear (or lack of) that made him come to that conclusion. He also said that buck was as big and healthy a NH deer will get at 1 1/2 yrs.

When I was about to leave he told me I made one mistake. I asked him what was that? He said I should have waited 'til next year to shoot him!
