RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
the only animals i use scents on is deer.i challenge you blow hards to come to texas and see how good your skills are.there are many deer here but they are very elusive. you can sit dor hours and never see a thingusing a scent is no different than using a scope. it is just another tool to help improve your hunting.i never used scents until a few years ago. the hunting was very tuff that year. when a buck came to my scented candle and knelt down on it front legs, i had to laugh. idid not shoot that deer.it is a tool to pull the deer out of ravines and heavy wooded areas. it is no sure thing but it does help at times. by saying it would not work on mature deer you are very wrong

RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
propper use of a call or scent is no different than the proper use of a gun. you do not put a scent right where you are. you do not use a call when the deer is on top of you.i use a cover scent that blends with the natural surroundings. i only use the scented candles during the rut. i have been hunting the same buck for 2 years,a 9 pointer with about a 5 inch drop tine. we have not been able to get him out of the steep ravines.last year he came out and came to the scented candle. buck fever got me and i missed the shot. it was not the candle that scared him off, it was my bad shot .

RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
dep214, man you got a lot of hostility built up in that small mind of yours, take a pill. As for the buck fever and candle thing, you have now educated that buck, so now what do you do, buy a new fangled scent to lure him out again?
Why don' t you try blowing a trumpet, I hear that deer are very curious and will come around to see what the noise is. Better yet, why not piss in his scrapes, I hear that is supposed to trigger their territorial instincts. All kidding aside, you should be carefull about inviting me down to hunt your deer, the last guy that did that ended up helping me drag a 13 point non-typical out of his spot, I just walked right into his bedding area, got him out of bed and waited in the back door for him to circle, bang, dead deer!!! I did' nt need a call or scent, or any other artificial crap, just reached into my bag of tricks and put him on the wall!!! |
RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
I totally concur, never put something on the table you ain' t willing to sell! I had the same scenario with a pal, bet you can' t. Well i did and now he don' t talk to me. While not every tatic works in every area, their are bits and pieces in many hunters bag that just may. Hunting is agme of adapt and excute, sometimes it takes outside of the box to be successful.
Main theme is never say never, sure play the cards that seem to be best suited but don' t forget the joker;)!!!! |
RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
All these companys that are getting rich off an un-needed tactic are the ones that make us the suckers of the world Hunting has become way to influenced by new fangled gadgets and anyone that masters them is no better off than anyone else!! Sounds like a closed mind here that is convinced that these new techniques haven' t worked for them so they can' t POSSIBLY work for anyone else.If others post positive results than they must be wrong or suckers I guess.SAD,seems to be a lot of hostility from the opening post and name calling and inferring others are " suckers" tells me this whole thread was to insult, not discuss tactics! That Silver Ridge buck you like Marlin was shot by a guy into scents in the forties before most hunters even thought or knew about using anything like that.He developed and helped market a big buck lure over 50 years ago and hunted from treestands before treestands were even cool.Fred has shot multiple big bucks and several would go in the record books if he cared to enter them.Guess hes a sucker too,but a sucker with several Boone and Crockett deer.Nothing more to say or share on this thread. cheers woods |
RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
There is definetly to much hostility here. I personaly believe the only thing wrong with some of these products is that some new hunters think that they are a majic potion that will let them kill big bucks without the hard work and in that case I think some people do get suckered. There is no replacement for scouting and putting time in the stand but if there is something that gives a person a little more confidence it may keep him or her in the stand that extra few hours then no one should be critical of their personal choice, just my opinion.

RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
small heh! you are only 35 years old and already know it all. man have i ever dealt with people like you before. most of the time when theyare put to the test they fail. they always have excuses.ignorance of things you know nothing about is no excuse.
the buck i shot at and missed last year was my fault.i am considered as a marksman with a rifle and a pistol. i did 25 years as a deputy sheriff here in texas. the buck i shot at and missed ran away. what i did not complete was that the buck came back about 5 minutes later and landed in my freezer.now according to you it does not work. guess the deer did not what you said. you sure have a lot of growing up and learning to do for the age of 35.we have 4 very experienced hunters on our lease. 2 are guides in other parts of texas.they both like to rattle and use scents. my father in law was a hunter all over the country. he has a 7x7 elk on the wall. they used scents and calls. all the guides on that land used calls. the way you talk sounds like alittle man wanting to send out a big opinion with little knowledge. when it boils down he is still a little man. |
RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
Amen Buckshot,I think you just nailed it!Heck I' ve used turkey calls to help me get deer.I try all the tricks I know and hope to learn alot more. Can you walk like armadillo?Great way to cross leaves.

RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
Well Deputy, I never have been arrested, never pulled over for DWI and never stayed a night in jail. I own 3 buisnesses and work an average of 70 hours per week. I spend 4 months out of the year just hunting and scouting, 5 days a week, so I guess I put my time in and last but not least, I dont sugar coat my conversation just to make people happy, if you dont like it, voice your opinion and be a big enough man to take what you give, for example, you say I am a blowhard, but yet you in turn are blowing pretty hard here.
I guess I thought that the guys on this board could take a little friendly razzing, but I guess most of you are too closed minded ( a little competition never hurt anyone). I know that when me and my buddy' s are swapping stories, there is always that added nudge at the end. Sorry if I hurt your little feelings, get over it!!! |
RE: The trouble with scents & calls!!
it seems that you are the one that close minded and thought of that way by others.i doubt some of the validity of what you say. you try to come across as a know it all. you can spout bs to someone who might believe you about owning 3 businesses and only working about 7 months a year. give me a break. i will get over it when you grow up,which i doubt is any time soon
