Anyone have any idea what these are?

Found them in a doe today. Those are the tenderloins on each side.

Blood clots???

Bank 11-09-2009 02:37 PM

Well, I have two comments. I have never seen anything like that on the inside of a deer. And, those are the most beautiful looking tenderloins I've ever seen. What do you do to get the inside of a deer to look so clean? Mine are always caked with blood and sometimes leaves.:s6:

they were on a buck i dressed today too. i thought it was ****.

I'm in the Northeast Corner, sometimes referred to as the "Quiet Corner". How's the huntin' for you?

joshen520 11-09-2009 03:11 PM

those tenderloins honest to god just made me go take mine out of the freezer to cook up. thanks. but yeah my first guess was clots...?

uncle matt 11-09-2009 03:38 PM

That doe was shot face to face in the right side of the neck just off the throat (her left). I think it took the carotid artery cause there wasn't much blood left in her at all!

Still want to know what those little bloody jelly bean like things are though. Bigger than rice and way softer than a jelly bean. Only on the fat right there by the tenderloins.

Champlain Islander 11-09-2009 03:50 PM

Cut them out they should make good soup. Or you could dry them and use them on a salad just like croutons.:s13:

bigwhitetailbuck 11-09-2009 04:48 PM

Remnard... Im also in the northwest corner of CT.. Where do you hunt? Im up at the Johnnycake Airport in Burlington..

You might try sending a copy to the Department of Fish & Game and see if they can answer your question. They often know quite a bit about various deer diseases and/or what is normal but often thought of as a disease. Another option might be to see if someone at the USDA might know. They inspect meat all the time.

You guys must have not cleaned too many deer. Those things are in every deer I have ever killed. Sometimes many, sometimes just a few. I really can't tell you what they are, but they aren't blood clots. They are probably cysts.

bigbulls 11-09-2009 05:27 PM

They are in dang near every deer I kill too. I figure they're probably lymph nodes or something like that.

crokit 11-09-2009 05:38 PM

Could they be from fawns banging the teet area when nursing?

Very intresting thought indeed.

skeeter 7MM 11-09-2009 08:08 PM

No clue why or what but not uncommon here either.

uncle matt 11-10-2009 05:40 AM

I have seen them before also. Just want to know what they actually are.

PY Antlers 11-10-2009 05:49 AM

Wow..........like everyone else......never seen that before. To my knowledge you don't get blood clots in fat........clots stay in veins and muscule. I would say it some kind of parasite or something. Cook it hot and fast............maybe dip it in a little shore lunch

CAM2 11-10-2009 06:05 AM

i don't know what they are. hopefully someone will know or find out what they are. i've seen them many times in deer that i've cleaned in florida and georgia as well.

I agree, I think they were in about every deer I have ever cleaned. I know they were in the 4 I cleaned last week. They look like blood clots to me.

UncleNorby 11-10-2009 07:14 AM

Here's what they are...............nothing to worry about. If anyone knows the real name for them, I'd like to know too.

Exactly. They are not in the meat anyway, so it's really no big deal. I've seen uglier things in deer than those, I can promise you that.

I've forward your photos to my friend the game biologist for my area. I've also seen them in most deer I've taken.

I'll post the info when I heard back from him. ---Thom

Western MA Hunter 11-10-2009 10:00 AM

i hunt the canaan / salisbury area myself..

Ol'Mongo 11-10-2009 10:53 AM

They look like lymph nodes. I've seen them in the deer's throat but never in the loins.

guide1 11-10-2009 02:05 PM

Those are kidney beans, put 'em in a soup!!

I can't say I'm an expert when it comes to deer anatomy, but I've gutted, skinned, butched, deboned, and trimmed off fat of, at best guess, about 30 deer in my life and that's the first I've ever seen of anything that looks like that. Maybe it's common in some parts of the country and not in others (?) (all I've been dealing with is Missouri, mostly grain-fed, deer) but I would've been surprised too if I opened one up and saw that. Maybe on deer #31 I'll be surprised....)

crokit 11-10-2009 02:23 PM

I've only seen this, in that area, on does, and not every one that I've taken. That's why I believed it to be fawn nursing related, particularly the way the fawns will '" bang the sack " with their heads, possibly causing small capillaries to rupture.
