I would say, go with the 308, in a savage rifle.
They aren't to pricy, and shoot really good.

You can do a lot of different kind of hunting with a lot of different factory ammo with the .30-06.

The .308 will suit you well. I'm 5'11" about 180lbs. I got my .308 when I was ~13 and it was the perfect amount of punch for me.

.308 w/150gr bullet is perfect for deer.

308 would be my choice.. There is a reason the US Armed forces chaned from 30-06 to 308... Smaller weapons with shorter actions and less weight for ammo carrying purposes

All the argument about caliber and "overkill" only proves just how unimportant caliber is. Find a rifle that is a natural extension of your body and feels perfect to hold. Whatever caliber it happens to be...perfect.
(Except for 50 BMG...now that's overkill.)
