We have been open in TN since Sept. 26th and I am on another forum that is mainly just TN hunters and topics are more related to our state. We have been discussing this one since the opener as we have had a bumper crop of acorns here.

The reason you are not seeing deer is the acorns. They do not have to move anywhere to find food. they are simply getting up out their beds and walking 50 feet or 50 yds and there are a ton of acorns to eat. What we have done and it is working is finding those dominant trees the one the deer are feeding on and hunting it. It will take some scouting, but look for the ground rooted up, acorn shell caps, and fresh droppings. I have found a good set of white oaks that are still dropping and it is 50 yds from the thicket the deer bed in. they come out right before dark come to the acorns eat and will not come out of the cover. I have only got one shot and I hit her high. No blood and I'm about 95% sure she will be fine.

Unfortunately food plots may be wasted a bit this year as it may take them another 2-3 weeks to clean up the acorns and by that time the frost will have sapped any greens. Cut corn should bring them in when the acorns are gone though.

This year are acorn crop is bad. Last feb we experienced a massive ice storm, practically every tree in the woods that is still standing got damaged. Maybe next year when the trees recover a bit more we will be back to having some nuts.

I could understand this being a problem for people who have no wooded areas on their property.

Go find the tree the deer are favoring for acorns. It works!!! Trust me!!

I am in South New Jersey and the acorns are falling big time and the are large acorn.
I also noticed that on my property the walnuts and pine cones are falling by the tuns also.
Gonna be a bad winter or is that just a myth?
