Q for you buckshot guys
I've always used slugs so I have a couple questions.
Example gun: 12ga pump 3" chamber
When using buckshot, what choke do you use?
What sort of range are YOU comfortable shooting?

You have to test your gun with the different chokes and different brand buckshot to see...
My Browning B-80 prefers 3 inch Winchester 00 Supremes with the Improved Choke...Your max range is where you can consistantly put 4-5 pellets into a 10 inch circle, or 40 yards whichever comes first...

I use a Benelli 592 with an extra full Primos choke with Winchester 3" 00B. I put 12 pellets in a 18 inch diameter target at 40 yds. I feel comfortable shooting at a buck at 70 yds with buckshot, but I rarely shoot at a deer over 30 yds with buckshot.

I use a Remington 870 Magnum 3". I shoot winchester 3" #1B with a full choke and put over half in a pie plate at almost 50 yards. Most shots though are under 40 so I have no issue with not killing them.

I also use a Remington 870 3" Mag with Federal 000 buckshot and a modified choke. I got 8 out 10 pellets in a pie plate at 50 yards. That is the farthest that I have shot and harvested a deer with buckshot. I have personally seen a deer shot at 80 yards with buckshot while running but they had a custom built choke and have been using buckshot their entire hunting career.
