When bow hunting, I go 18-20ft. Too high requires severe angled shots when the deer is only 15-20 yards from the base of the tree.
Rifle hunting - as high as I can go and feel safe 25-35 ft. I can see along way from there and my rifle can reach!

the only time I hear about high stands is online....guys going over 18 or 20'...
Also how are you measuring, maybe most guys measure to their head when theyre standing...
most stands use to be 13' or so to the platform...many still are
but I tend to like 15-17' to the platform...

My ideal height is right at 15ft. Whether I am bow or gun hunting. Most ladder stands that you buy are usually 15ft so I practice at that height and I alo take my climber to around that height. It is where I feel most comfortable. Mainly because I am afraid of heights, so therefore I don't want my queasy stomach distracting me from my hunting.

The only answer here is depends. Depends on the tree, surrounding cover, where the major trails are at that I'm covering. Never want too steep of an angle, really makes those close shots tougher than they should be. My ladder stands are 12 or 15 foot, most of my hang on stands are hung at 15-18 mainly because I use them where I need to get higher than my ladder stands, and my climber I'm usually at 18-20 as the trees I climb can never give me enough cover, I do try to stay farther from the trails then atleast 20 yrds then.
