You need to ask if the respondent is male or female. Color blindness is extremely rare in females. Females responding to your survey could skew your results.

1. Have you ever hunted deer? Yes

2. If yes, overall, how experienced are you as a hunter? (pick one) somewhat experienced.

3. Have you ever gone deer hunting? Yes

4. How many times did you go deer hunting in the past year? Several

5. If any, in the past year, how many deer have you seen while hunting? Several

6. If any, in the past year, how many deer have you taken a shot at, but missed? None

7. If any, in the past year, how many deer have you actually killed? One doe

8. What is your age? 19 now, 18 last season

9. Do you wear glasses or contacts? Yes

10. If so, are you: Near sighted? Yes

11. Are you color blind? No (But note that I am female)

:sheep: We sheep are color deficient of course, but we don't go deer hunting

kbinko92 08-29-2009 08:07 AM

I'm trying to see if being color blind gives an advantage or disadvantage when deer hunting. The theory is that color blindness has stuck around and not disappeared in humans because it can give advantages when doing some tasks. In monkeys, ones who have color blindness are able to find more fruits and camouflaged insects than monkeys with normal color vision. I'm trying to see if this applies to humans, except with deer since we don't exactly try to find fruits and insects in the jungle.

I think that is the exact opposite. Having color vision would give a selective advantage in that it would enable arboreal primates the ability to readily recognize ripe fruits.

Generally, predators (and their prey) have visual systems attuned to recognize movement rather than color. If a mouse sits still, a cat cannot "see" it. But when the mouse moves, the cat's visual system "sees" it immediately.

If a hunter wears como, he/she is not readily visible to a deer until he/she moves. Blue is detectable by deer. (Don't wear blue jeans while hunting.) they also see hunter orange as a bright shade of gray, whereas pink does not show up very well for a deer. It has been suggested, because of this, that hunters wear pink instead of hunter orange. This idea has not received a lot of supprt.

Pink does not show up as bright as orange to some of us color-blind hunters. If you want the other guy with a rifle to see you, wear orange.
