What To Take With You
What all do you all take with you when you go hunting? Everything under the sun, or just what you need? I"ve been trying to take everything under the sun, and by the time I get to my hunting spot, I'm too wore out to hunt! I think this year, I'll just take what I need!
|
Take what you need, and cover a couple of " what ifs ".:s6:
|
I used to pack my ALICE pack full of junk when I went hunting. I'd be humping around 30 lbs worth of stuff "just in case." The last couple years I've left that stuff in the truck and decided to hunt light. In addition to weather appropriate clothing, I take my gun, a few extra rounds of ammo, my license/tag with a pen, my knife (actually I carry 2, one folding and one fixed blade), a basic 1st aid kit, my cell phone, a bottle of water and maybe a snack. The places I hunt I'm rarely more than a mile from my vehicle, so I leave a lot of the "extra" stuff there. I can always walk back to get it if I need it.

I have a small pack that I always take with me no matter where and how I hunt. Inside I have the following...
- Rain Gear - gloves - Windicator - 4 glow sticks - flash light - GPS - extra batteries for items that require them - drag harness with rope - hand/feet warmers packs (when it's cold) - extra ammo (mostly an extra load vile for my ML) - either several bottles of water or a CamelBack reservoir - ThermaCell with refills - scent-free hand wipes - skinning knife - extra pair of socks - survival gear just in case (sewing kit, signal mirror, fire starting kit) - assortment of plastic bags - electrical tape I've had to use all of those items at least once. |
if it dosnt fit in my pack i dont need it :)

That's what I forgot... I always carry 50' of 550 (parachute) cord and a Mini-Mag light (the 2 AA version). I keep a 4 D cell Mag Light in the truck in case I have to do an after dark tracking job, but I've never needed it. Mike |

What, no one carries a compas?
I carry two. You never know. |
Skid paper and a light.
|
I carry a small backpack with flashlight, grunt calls, gloves, knife, compass, hunting license, and what ever else I need to carry.
|
Gun(s), ammo, knife and thermos of coffee.
Yes, I've gotten wet but not worth carrying a rainsuit. I don't hunt where I haven't scouted, so no need for the compass, GPS, etc. My trips are usually 3 - 4 hours max. |
From my personal experience, I have learned that if I don't bring the TP, I increase my chances of needing it by about 47%.
That statistic is pretty close to scientific. C. Davis |

That statistic is pretty close to scientific. C. Davis I bring a roll of TP to use for marking a tracking job. But it gets used way more often as skid paper |
I only take the very basics: (excluding my weapon)
Knife, rope, compass, flashlight, cell phone, license and pen, pair of latex gloves. |
I take a flashlight, snuff, grunt call, and 'the can.' Anything else I can run to the truck and grab if needed.
|
License, knife, small flashlight, extra ammo, water bottle, lunch, a snack or 2, cover scent, call, wiindicator, about 20 ft of parachute cord and depending on the weather, I'll add either a sweatshirt, light jacket or raingear.
I'll normally have additional stuff in the truck in case I need it. I try to keep it as simple and compact as I can. |
I try to take as little with me into the woods as possible...the truck is never more than a mile away for me either. With me into the woods comes:
1. My weapon of choice 2. Extra projectiles to be sent from #1 3. A couple flashlights. 4. A couple knives. 5. A couple water bottles. 6. A thermos of coffee...just as often used for waking purposes, as for warming. 7. Cell Phone. 8. Compass. 9. Snacks and lunch if I plan on staying out that long. 10. TP. 11. A few calls (true talker, K & H EZ grunter, doe bleat can) and a rattle bag. 12. About 40' of rope. 13. My dragging mechanism (very closely related to #12, just shorter with a "fastener" on one end.) 14. My wallet, which holds my license, etc. 15. A lighter. 16. Binoculars. 17. Rangefinder. 18. Compact Bible. Sounds like a ton, but all packs in a small pack and doesn't take up all that much space. Never thought I took that much until i looked at this list! |
