Getting Started

Hey fellas, this is my first year getting into hunting and I'm looking for pointers. I'll be going out for the archery hunt this August, and I plan on going up to my hunting grounds to scout ASAP. I'm curious as to where to start looking for signs, and general terrain features deer like to hang around. The forests I'll be hunting in are in southern Utah, between 8000 and 10,000 feet, and they're thick pines; what sort of things do I look for in this setting to find myself a buck?

One thing I'm curious about as well is where deer can be found relative to campgrounds and roads. I've read that the crowds will force the deer into the mountain; how far up the mountain will that trophy buck usually go?

Last but not least, any pointers for a beginning hunter? I'm sure a lot of this stuff sounds pretty comical to you experienced guys, but I've never done this before and I figure the best way to learn is go out and see it first hand. Thanks for your help guys.

Well hunting in Wisconsin is way different than hunting in Utah so I really don't know much about the way of the deers life there but one thing I can tell you is #1 Always try to be as scent free as possible. #2 Hunt downwind from where you expect deer to come from. #3 Stick with this forum and you are bound to get your buck eventually. There's a lot of knowledge on here.
