RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
Well Many think WI is a great Hunting state.. That is if you like to fight over the deer with the rich guys who enjoy hoarding area herds into their personal honey holes with feedersand baiting that can not be competed with by the law abbiding little man.. Or if you would like to spend 3 grand to hunt 5 days in Buffalo cty.. Or if you would like to pay 1500-3000 bucks an acre for a plce to try to hoard your own private herd..
To me.. being a workin man with a lmited resource for hunting.. I am farther ahead driving to a state that does not tolerate this crap.. It will cost me less and I will actually be hunting the deer instead of the deer hunting for bait piles.. So regardless of how many P&Y deer WI produces.. Those deer are not available to very many little guy working man hunters.. If they are they probably have been named and trained at a local feeder behind a home or hunting shack someplace and are already semi domesticated ..,Ifthey spnd too much time at tese feeders which they do at some point they will be shot off and bragged about in the newspaper about how the deer was hunted hard for 3years and it finally made a mistake..LOL...That story never changes.. Hunting has become so rediculous in WI that I do not even look forward to it any more.. I do look forward to heading to other states.. But here.. It just is not hunting anymore NH |

RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
Lans, not only is that not "on the topic" of who is the worst deer hunting state.... thats an OOOOOOOLD article. There has been 4-5 years of significant herd reduction in Pa since then. Pa has a high human population and tons of roads + drivers. Not surprising in the least. We have since fallen to I believe forth in that category. Dont see what that has to do with much of anything.
What is surprising is the ecoextremist deer plan still being in place despite the continued outrage of Pennsylvanians over it and despite the fact the gameless commission who are now made up of audubon nuts etc.. Are still holding firm despite being sued, audited and financially punished by legislators. |
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
Cornelius,
I was just posting it for general info that is relevant to the topic. It certainly seems that, whether PA be first or fourth on the list, the deer hunting seems to be great for folks in autos.:D |

louisiana is a great place, not near the best though.

zzzwark, note where treboryerf is from. Of course, Richland Parish is not exactlya deer mecca. Where I hunt, Union Parish, there are plenty of deer, and some very good ones I might add. We Louisianan's know about the quality deer we have. Louisiana just may be one of the best kept secrets in deer hunting.

RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
I know that's why you said go to Texas. I live in West Monroe and own land in Lillie (Union Parish), which is between Bernice and Junction City, Ark. I know there are deer in Richland Parish, but it wouldn't be my 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.... choice to hunt. There just aren't near as many deer there as there are in many Parishes in the state, but you probably already know that. I'm not trying to knock where you hunt. You may be in a productive area in Richland.

How about Rhode Island?

RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
Well if we're talking chosing which parish to hunt if I could I too would probably want to hunt tensas or madison parish over richland parish, but in my part of richland parish we have some really good deer numbers and some decent deer also,I am right on the richland, franklin line and actually hunt both parishes, but I don't think there is any better hunting than in the mississippi delta in madison and tensas parishes,in Louisiana that is.I love hunting the hardwoods, not so fond of the pine.

RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
NJ should be at the top, if not OVER the top, but that also depends on what you consider the "worst" conditions.
If you like extremely crowded (NJ has more bowhunters per square mile of deer habitat than any other state, and that was BEFORE crossbows were legalized), NJ will not be the worst. But iflike seeing bait piles and tree stands every 74.6 yards, and getting run out of the WMA's during gun season by large waves of driving hunters, and the opportunity to shoot 6 spikes and unlimted button bucks and does each year, long unlimited gun seasons and an absolute hatred for quality hunting (and as we found out bow hunting too) held deeply by those who manage our deer herd, well then, if you like all that, NJ is not the worst. If you don't like all that, NJ would be a nightmare for you. NJ exports(to hunt other states)a higher percentage of hunters than any other state, and that is for very, very good reasons...the Fish and Game Council and Division of Fish and Wildlife have done an absolute horrible job of deer management here. |
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
I surprised California isn't on this list.
This has got to the worst hunting grounds. |

Seems like there weren't that many cops on that stretch of road back in the late 70's. I got my first speeding ticket in Mississippi coming back from Ft Benning a couple of months after graduating from La Tech. |
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
"What is surprising is the ecoextremist deer plan still being in place despite the continued outrage of Pennsylvanians over it"
The problem is that the outrage is only felt by a single digit percentage of Pennsylvanian's, and a larger, but still small percentage of hunters. There's only one groups thats outraged and most of them come from a one or two county area that has the worst habitat in the entire state. |
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
MISSISSIPPI
|
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
I have hunting in Georgia for many years.
The state has some spots where deer are everywhere. But on the other hand, there are many spots that even though you know the deer is there. It seems like a ghost field. I believe it might be that way everywhere.. some good spots and some bad. Its all relevant. |
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
"The problem is that the outrage is only felt by a single digit percentage of Pennsylvanian's, and a larger, but still small percentage of hunters."
A large majority of Pennsylvanians support hunting in the state. A large majority ALSO DID NOT push for extreme low deer densities in the name of ridiculous goals like unnatural amounts of trillium and hobblebush!!! As Audubon clowns have. A far smaller contingent of extremists (much smaller than number of hunters) are dictating the management, and pushed for the "extremes" in the first place.. The hunter nonfriendly (not antihunting, just couldnt care less about the sport, as long as their agenda is fulfilled) whackos like many of the audubon and other supposed "environmentalist" groups. That is wrong. " There's only one groups thats outraged and most of them come from a one or two county area that has the worst habitat in the entire state. " Not true. The entire states wmus have been reduced well below cc. The deer densities on average in the BEST wmus are below 24 owdpsm. Thats lower herd goal than the best areas of Maine and other low dd states. And when you speak of the vast expanses of Pa with 10 owdpsm or less, your speaking of the ridiculous. The complaints are coming from across the state. I am actually from one of the "better" areas and it is far poorer than should be. And I do not know ONE hunter from the area that supports the current level of excessive reduction that is continuing according to pgcs own data on the annual reports, despite claims of reduction before each season for the last 4 years! LOL Pgc is the most hated wildlife agency of any state Ive ever seen or heard of. If you do not agree, you are either one of the "players" from pgc/dcnr or conservation extremist group. If not, then I suggest you become more educated on the politics of Pa deer management before attempting to debate them |

RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
FLORIDA is the worst!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
I gotta say in answer to Mississippi. There are 3 million head of deer, hundreds of thousands of public land, and the season starts on Oct.1(archery) and ends on Feb.31 in my zone(primitive). If you can't kill a deer here, you're just not trying hard enough.I shot 3 bucks last season(my zone is considered the "worst' area in the state).I passed on a ton of anterless and young bucks.Ms is far from the worst state.I'd put it in the top 10 best states actually.

Musta been his imaginary friend. |
RE: What is the worst deer hunting state?
I would say Hawaii, but not too many people go to Hawaii to deer hunt. Why would you?
For actually going deer hunting, I would say Florida. It is a hot miserable time in the swamp and very difficult to hunt |
