I'm looking more and more towards Iowa, what's the going rate for a archery hunt during the rut, anyone know?

It's about$500.00 for a nonresident Iowa tag that you have to get drawn for. Wisconsin is a over the counter $160.00. (This is for archery)

They're all good I have no idea which is the best. Get enough neighbors to cooperate and you can make it happen anywhere in a known big buck state.

Wis. registers more B-C bucks than any other state ,almost double the other states but I believe Ill. has a few bigger ones.

I wonder, though, if number of hunters factors in to it. Kansas (my state) enters plenty of trophy bucks in the books but with nowhere near the hunter numbers of a state like Wisconsin (we also have less deer, FWIW).

Also, our success rates seem high, probably because deer are more concentrated into patches of cover. I compared it to Michigan once (where my family lives), and if memory serves, we get about double the number of tags filled successfully. Presumably, that means it would be easier to run into a bigger deer simply because he doesn't have as many places to hide (not that a trophy deer is ever easy).

Pardon me if my $.02 only muddies the waters.

You could make a case for almost any of the states you listed. It all depends on the area you are hunting--hunting pressure, terrain and cover, etc. In other words, you stand a good chance of killing a 170 in Iowa, KS, IL, WI or OH ifall the ingredients are there.

IMHO, NY State has been somewhat of a sleeper through the years. In fact, until the Early '60's, Roosevelt Lucky's buck-Allegany co.- was the # 1, prior to the Jordan Buck emerging.

Pennsylania had 1 million hunters for many, many years. Many of them hunting forested-only public land.

On PA land with decent nutrition and low hunting pressure, we're seeing a lot of big and heavy deer in the last several years.

BarnesX: allowing them to get a few years under them couldn't have hurt, either,

Exactly. And good habitat with low hunter density will do that. Sure, antler restrictions help, but they're not enough in the high hunter density areas. Out in the mid-west, they have a lot of land with much fewer hunters.

We hunt in the middle of nowhere in PA. There's lots of private land and huge tracks of state land with limited access. You won't see another hunter if you get off the highway just a little. There's always been slammers coming out of those areas. The guys just have to work their asses off for them. They're not hunting the edge of an alfalfa field. We're talking about 1000 acre swamps and overgrown clearcuts.

Buffalo county Wi. registers more B-C and P-Y bucks than most States yep they do. Mostly private land and they let small ones grow up, now a 3 year old buck there will be huge, great gene's

How is Texas not on this list? I'm from Wisconsin, but just wondering. Also does this have to be an opinion?-isn't there just a clear cut number implying which state has the most 170"+ deer?

I voted Ohio. For 100% wild, fair chase deer(This means NO FENCE)...i have to say Ohio followed by Illinois. These two states have the best chances for and most qualifying 170"+ deer.

Kentucky is number 2 in the nation for B&C bucks per square mile. Most any of these states would be great however.

Maybe not...you need to look at the cost to hunt these two states and the easy for non resident hunters to be able to hunt it. Ky is much cheaper and anyone can buy a tag over the counter.....but dont get me wrong...I love all these the outfitters taking over your state rather than mine.

Kybuck,

Nobody even knew what an outfitter was in southeastern Illinois 15 years ago. Now it is increasingly common. Trust me, they will be coming to your neighborhood soon.[:o]

That is one reason why I don't like to hunt the mid west anymore. I like to be able to hunt open land and gain permission with a handshake just like it is here. The new mid west hunting is all about the money and something is lost in the process. Pay to hunt or leasing is a blight just like posted land. Once it starts it gets worse and never ends. It is like a catch 22 though. When the deer hunting gets great for large mature deer then the money comes into play and it is never the same.
