A question for TR and others....
A few years back I was leaving the woods just at dark after a day off bow hunting. As I entered the logging road, I saw a big buck about 30 yds away. He was quartering away from me. He was also the darkest deer I have ever seen - almost totally black.
As this deer was headed for deeper woods, he made the loudest and strangest sound I have ever heard a deer make. It was a loud hiss, like that of a mountain lion. He continued to hiss at me as he finally went out of sight. If I had not seen this buck make that noise, I would have never thought a deer would make that sound.
What did this sound mean and why did he continue to hiss well after he knew I was in his area?
I have asked this question to other hunters and no one can answer because not many have heard that sound.

was it a buck "roar" ?
They have that call on the market...though supposedly is a seldom used vocalization.
Wasn't a "wheez" was it? Those can be pretty loud hiss sounding noise...

From the looks of things here, I would guess that the sound you heard was that of a big buck that had checked his favorite hunting forum and found a thread started by TR !!!

It was a very loud hiss as I described, very similar to a mountain lion. It really caught me off guard.
Thanks for your input.

Jimmy,
I am thinking maybe he was trying to clear his nose out to identify you. In doing so he was having trouble...kind of like a wheez gone bad if that makes any sense!

A hiss could be a "snort", which often borders on being a whistle, just a loud shhhhh. It is an alarm call.
It could also be part of the grunt-snort-wheeze, which is a threat call, usually to another buck.
God bless,
T.R.
