So you are going to money up to make sure you can haul your friends truck for him? FOR A 3 HOUR DRIVE? Seems they got your number.

But come on - the first thing you should pull is yourhead out of the sand.Go with a 3/4 or 1-ton for crying out loud.

Say the D-word.

I hauled a 30ft travel trailer loaded withmy 04'1500 (5.7 hemi) with no problems( motor had no mods). Gas milage sucks but then again it was never that great in the truck. In terms of off road my 99' chev with diff lock was very impressive, the dodge not as much but really depends on tires and driver. My wife had a hard time sticking the chevy. In terms of pullingthe chevy wouldn't cut the mustard on a heavy haul like a 30' trailer, 5.3L.

For work Iuse a 06' 3500 Ram 5.9 cummins, 6spd manual it haulswith ease. Prior I had a 05' F350 6.0L crew, it was a misery. Loved the room, good off road but power wasn't great under heavy loads, not to mention it spent far to much time in the shop. Both trucks had no mods for fear of something happening and losing income!

I still havemy 04' ram it has seen some mods now, slight lift, chip, intake, exhaust, lockers and open country MT's. It is my hunting rig and never had a problem with any terrain. In fact the truck hasn't seen the shop to much beside routine maintenance. It'll haulthe bob and trailer but not as effeciently or effortlessly as the deisel.

If your hauling only once a year the 1500 5.7 will do it, but the 3500 TD will do it easier. I don't think I'd buy an MDS one though, heard stories about them not being up to snuff. Off road the desiels can be both good and bad, the extra weight can be both friendly and foe...if you can drive you should be ok. MY opinion is if you buy a diesel then don't buy the expensive MT tires, they chew threw tires more so then a gas. Also I wouldn't want a dually for offroad, they are haulers and thats about it!

Anyone know the latest word of GM(?), Ford(?) or Dodge(?) supposedly getting a small diesel into their 1/2 ton trucks? What was that supposed to be a late 2009 or 2010 release?

Just my person experience here but I haul a 16 ft trailer everyday with a 2005 2500 5.7l hemi and this truck is a hunk of s--t!!! If you are going to haul buy a diesel or a dually.

I second this to an extent. I like our new Dodge Diesel 2500. The problem arises when a guy doesn't buy enough truck to do what he wants to do. When I bought my Chevy 1500 it was to hunt and field trial out of and I tried pulling a horse trailer with it and it is simply not designed for that. It was a nice truck but not for what I wanted.

If you are looking to haul something you will be extremely unhappy with a gas truck. I can tell you this from experience. The hemi is nice but will bet 8-9 miles a gallon hauling anything heavy. Gas trucks are for looking nice. Diesel trucks are for working. Trust me when I say this.

I know it's coming, heard/read about it probably a good year ago, though I remember it was years away so I'm thinking 2010 if anything.

But ya a small diesel for 1500 is in the works for all of them from what I know. Not sure if the 2500/3500 will also get the option, hopefully.

All the stats I've read about them though, I figured they would do better, all diesels fo rthat matter, I figured would get even better mileage than advertised...

Jeep's small diesel suggested not much better mileage, while VW's TDI gets 50mpg? A diesel jeep getting 22mpg vs. 18mpg doesn't impress me much.

I'm guessing once the half ton diesels come out you'll be able to tune em to get more power just like the big boys, though probably less gas mileage too.

I have also owned all 3 of the big name trucks. I currently have a 2009 Dodge Ram and a 2003 Ford F-I50.I pull about 4500lbs and they both perform greatif you don't mind the gas milleage hit. The 2009Dodge Ram is leaps and bounds better than previous models which I have owned 3 previous Rams.
Strictly for towing I would buy a 3/4 or 1 ton with a diesel as many have recommended.Which one is up to you. Look and drive for yourself to decide.I would avoid the V-10 at all costs unless you want to mortgage your house to pay for gas.

Off subject but I had to respond to a couple people who posted on this thread. For those that think the Big 3 are in a mess because of people not buying american wake up... It is so much deeper than that. I have been in the auto mfg business for going on 25 yearsand the issues are deep rooted. The writing has been on the wall for years.....

AMEN!!! To the statement of the writing has been on the walls. I will say this much, I have pulled the same 16ft trailer with a Toyota Tundra and it hauled better and got better mpg than the Dodge 2500 5.7l Hemi. ???A half ton pulling better and better mpg??? HHHUUUMMMM makes me think that its gotta be the truck.
