I went to my gun shop to buy a new a-bolt. I was told the a-bolts are being discontinued, and the shop would only carry the x-bolt. Why change a good thing? I walked out with a new Tikka.

love my new Xbolt in 7mm rem mag... shoots great... broke it in with and am shooting Remington Core Lokts right now..
No problems out to 200... haven't shot farther yet...

Also, my brother in law bought one in .270 WSM... Love his too.. no problems whatsoever...

I only shoot Browning BARs, but I would suggest changing ammo. I would definitely never buy another REM. rifle, their semi-autos are JUNK

If the bullets were tumbling and making "keyholes" as you state, how on earth were they even on paper at 300 yards?

I have an X bolt in .300 win mag and have never had an issue with it, I only shoot hand loads though. I have shot out to 400 yards and have been tickled by the groups. Sounds like you might have a bum barrel.
