Growth of the new antlers is actually what causes the old antlers to fall off, so they start growing right away, it just is not noticeable until late spring early summer. I actually saw a nice eight point on April 10, 2009 at about 10:00 p.m. that still had not shed. Last year I saw a small six pointer about a half mile from there with antlers in May. Not sure if it is the same deer or not. Kind of neat to see in April though.
