Hunter: Boycott the DNR
Unhappy with ban on feeding, baiting
By Anita Weier
April 25, 2003

NESHKORO, Wis. - Comparing the state Natural Resources Board to England' s King George III, Todd Mascaretti said he' s tired of being a colonist subjected to tyranny.

The Marquette County hunting enthusiast is trying to launch a boycott of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, in protest of the board' s decision this week to ban baiting and feeding of deer statewide, to double the size of the chronic wasting disease deer kill zone and to allow the DNR to use helicopters in deer hunts if necessary.

Mascaretti - a 35-year-old who is vice chairman for Marquette County in the Wisconsin Conservation Congress - is also angry because the state agency is proposing an increase in hunting and fishing license fees.

But mostly, he' s angry because " the DNR is out of control" - in its spending and its actions.

" We want to break the DNR, start from scratch and retake control of our department that is no longer representing the hunting community. We are their subjects," Mascaretti said.

" We are issuing a call to arms to all hunters and fishermen throughout the state for an all-out boycott of the DNR. It' s a stop of any support."

That means not buying licenses and not allowing hunting on their properties, he explained. It also means not supporting the DNR with money, volunteerism or assistance in reporting violators of game laws.

" The department has turned on the people funding them," said Mascaretti, who works with the developmentally disabled. " We do not want people shooting from helicopters. They should stop baiting and feeding in the CWD area, not in the rest of the state."

His father, Donald Mascaretti of Racine, is equally upset.

" They are ridiculous," he said of the Natural Resources Board. " They do what they want. Nobody can control the people on that board. They can bait in part of Michigan, so why not in part of Wisconsin?"

He noted that the board rejected an attempt to allow disabled people to bait dear for hunting.

" I' ve been hunting for 57 years," said the senior Mascaretti, who is 69. " If they use helicopters, I will buy a 10-gauge. I have cancer, but I' ll make a believer out of anyone. This is supposed to be a free country."

Both men said the economy of northern Wisconsin has been hurt by the DNR' s hunting restrictions.

" A friend from Illinois was going to buy property for turnkey hunting in Marquette County, but he' s not. He was coming up for turkey season but he' s not," Todd said.

Todd' s wife, Trista, 30, said she is a beginning bow hunter not yet confident enough to hunt without using bait.

" How do you get new people when you make it so hard for them?" she said.

Besides the family support, Todd Mascaretti said that several landowners in the area and friends are ready to support the boycott, but that he hopes it will spread statewide.

" This is a grass-roots effort. It will steamroll," he predicted.

Jorgy: Most of these threads pertaining to us locals are in the midwest forum. This guy sounds like another pissed off killer. I wonder what a guy like this would think if half the deer he killed last fall were positive.

Now that is just incredably stupid.[>:][:@] That goes against averything that hunters stand for. Supporting each other, keeping a good name for us hunters and getting rid of the poachers out there. If you hunt w/o a license then you become one of those poachers we try so hard to not be associated with.

Please!! Do you really need to be able to shoot a deer with it' s nose in a pile of corn to feel confident enough to kill one. Get out and practice if you want to gain confidence. Besides how else ore you going to learn. The best way is to learn from your mistakes.
They should stop baiting and feeding in the CWD area, not in the rest of the state."
What this guy doesn' t think that just because there hasn' t been a case reported outside the affected area that it' s not there.[] Deer do walk around and come into contact with other deer, drink from the same water, feed off of the same bait piles ets... etc... It' s known that feeding deer, elk, etc... is linked to CWD.

This guy needs to get over it and be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem!!![:@]

It`s not supposed to be easy. That`s why it is called hunting.

Hmm seems attention is being forwarded.

Folks if you don not know me then don' t knock me. Research before you pass judgement. This is beyond the bait issue. Lanowners rights and DNr failures are subject. Ban is merely part of the problem. My history has supported the DNr in past and if they followed the deer 2000 recomendations we would not be here in this situation. Fact is they do not listen to us any more. Like me or not my position stands as a conviction of what is true and not emotional as the original plea for the ban was. There is no I repeat no need to expanmd the erradication zone nor ban bait permannantly. Do your homework.

Jorgy thinl I wouldn' t see this.-TM

Last I check pal, landowners didn' t own the deer. I gathered all the facts I need to know about you from the above article. What part of baiting spreads CWD aren' t you understanding? You want to trade hunting spots? Last I checked, baiting will be allowed in mine. Before you take me up on my offer you might want to know 1 thing. Half the deer I shot last fall tested positive for CWD. Thats 50% Todd. Do you sell deer corn on your farm? Are you sure this isn' t about money out of your pocket from lost corn sales? Is it because tags will cost more? How long has it been since we had an increase? How do our costs for tags compare to other states? What good is calling for everyone to stop buying lisences going to do? How is that gonna get rid of Chronic Wasteing Disease in my back yard?
I seem to be following you. Thats a copy and paste from the other site in case you didn' t notice.

Jorgy just keeping you on your toes. Thanks for transfering the article to this site.

No I do not farm. Any more questions?

We have no CWd here so why expand erradication into my area?

A stand has to and will continue to be made.-TM
