Late Rut

My grandson and I picked up a couple of cameras we had out for 4 days last Saturday. There were four nice 8 points and several younger bucks in the pictures. They are still hard in rut. They look like they have lost 50 pounds or more. Active scrapes are all over the place, more than we saw in late Jan while the season was still open. I don't know what could be done to the south Bama deer herd to get the rut kicked off earlier in the year, but they will be chasing does for another month it looks like.

Here in SE Alabama, atleast somne of the does come in heatwell after the end of our season, which has come on Jan. 31 for many, many years. I am guessing the second estrus but I am not so sure that it has not been the first in some ways. Ihave seen bucks fighting like heck, freshly worked rubs and frequently worked scrape lines down into mid spring turkey season ... late March and early April. It is not unusual to see very young, fully spotted 30 +/-pound fawns into middle of November. I have often wondered why when what I read from folks up north is that the peak of the rut islate October to early November-ish?

Sounds like turkeys using old scrapes to dust in more than likely.
