Help me score these sheds.....

I was out scouting turkeys today with my nephew and I found these two sheds together about 30 yards from my girlfriends stand location. I know its difficult without knowing an accurate spread. Just give me a guess. I have pics of every buck on my place (or so I thought) and my girlfriend and I never saw this deer one time. Not on trail cams or anything. I am really baffled because we know the deer on our place pretty well (or so we thought). I have some really freakish big deer on my place but I think this guy may be the king. Good thing is he is still alive! Anyone know how many days until the archery opener? My God I can't wait.

To help out a little the circumference of the bases is 5.5 inches on each side. The total beam length on the right antler is 23 and the left is 25.75. The G3 on the right antler is 13.5. The G2 on the left antler is 13.5. This deer is a 5x7. I think he will score well. Tell me what you think.

Good Lord! What a find! I'm just going to throw this out there, but I think he will gross 165". Somewhere around there I would imagine would be close. Not sure on what state your from, but in my part of IL. he seems to have the mass of a 4 yr. old deer. That is good news for you. I would make this deer a special project. No doubt he will be a booner this coming season.

RE: Help me score these sheds.....

After doing some figuring, I have him at 174" gross. I came up with 85" on the left antler, 72" on the right antler and I gave him a respectable 17" inside spread. Your holding a gross booner in your hands!

I was thinking around there too. I had no idea this deer was on my place until I found those horns yesterday. It's my mission to kill this deer. I now know where he hangs out. That's half the battle. Now I just need to figure out what time.

with all the measurements you've provided, what's the problem with estimating score, other than guessing width? All the bench marks have been provided to be REAL close to all other existing measurements.

Real nice buck/find tho!! Congrats.

Shooooo! What a find, I'd guess 165 to 175 hard to estimate, bow season isn't that far away hang in there.

RE: Help me score these sheds.....

I can't wait for bow season. Just bought a new Switchback XT and some turkeys are gonna die so I can get my bow hunting fix. What are the chances of a deer of that magnitude being on my spot and me not even knowing. I have literally hundreds of pics of many different bucks that I can readily identify when they show up. I was just really surprised to find those sheds from a buck I didn't know was there. My girlfriend and I are headed out tomorrow on a more advanced antler hunting trip. I didn't really expect to find much because just last week I saw a dead buck on the road with both antlers still on. He was a younger 8.

It can happen and happens more than you think.Mature deer tend to head back to their core areas this time of year. I would say he left your area during the rut or could be extremely nocturnal. I hope the latter is not the case for you. I would find this guy in the summer because I think you best chance to score on him would be the opening week.

I'm not sure on what state you are from, but judging by the mass I would not guess him over 4 1/2. People will try and say that there is no way you can judgea deer by his mass. I tend to differ. Where I'm from the bucks really don't start putting on great mass until the are 4-5 years old. I use this with many other factors when I field judge a buck. This deer should put on some inches and a lot of mass this year.

Very nice sheds regardless of score. You should have a Taxi mount them on a synthetic skull. A neat way to display nice sheds, looks like a euro mount.

165-175 pretty easily I figured him at a 18.5 spread but its hard to say good luck next year he is a monster!

Some have wondered what state I'm in and I guess I should have put that I'm in Kansas where the giants rome. I hope he's bigger next year.

He's either a good old biggun or a big old goodun........Matue deer range over a large area, he may have dropped his sheds while just passing thru.

Not really. During the rut I would agree with you, but during later winter to the following fall you would be suprised how small a mature bucks core area really is.

One reason you may have never seen him before is because of time of year. Its possible he moved into your area because of a late season food source, and winters in your area. Either way, awesome sheds!....good luck with him in the fall

Lets say this deer is 4 1/2 years old. If he lives to be 6 do you think he has the capabilities of putting on another 20 inches of antler. That would put him right around 190 I think. The Kansas state typical record is 193 so I've been told.

Yes, in theory he could gain another 20" or so, but often times with age comes non-typical points thus causing more deductions than this buck already has (he has a bunch). I would say that if he is 4.5 than it would be pretty safe to say that he could be a 180"-190" deer no problem in a couple of years, especially with the mass that he will gain being a Kansas buck! If you are implying that he may be close to the state record in a couple of years just know that the state record buck had a NET score of 193", meaning that bucksgross score could have been well over 200" depending on how many deductions he has.

Great sheds!

RE: Help me score these sheds.....

Great find, here is best quess
33 for circumference
48.75 length
83 for tines
18 for spread
Score of 182
I don't believe he scores that high but if your measurements are taken correctly and we assume the length of the tines are in proportion, maybe
To be sure just measure length of each tine, take 4 measurements of base ,circumference from a spot between eachtine maximum of 4 on each side.
Very good thread.
Looking at the sheds he should be around 170 tho.

Where do you see a bunch of deductions?
In the length differences in his tines and the fact that he is a 7x5 typical. Those last 2 tines on the left side are deductions to the final score. Those 2 tines are worth about 6" of deductions to his gross score, plus the length differences in the g-2s (look to be about 1.5-2" difference), the g-3's (look to be about 1"-2" different), and the g-4's (look to be about 2-3" different). That right there adds up to between 10"-12" in deductions. So, if he grosses 175 right now, his net will be more like 163", and that isnt taking in to account the differences in mass and the brows/main beam differences. He will probably net around 160" as is.

I would say around 155. Could be more but with out know what the inside spread is it's very hard to get an acurate measure.

Had this rack scored by two different guys. One gave him a 20" spread and a score of 181. The other guy scored him at 179 with an 18" spread. FYI.

Surely A Pope & Young. Maybe not A B & k. From the Measurments I would guess 155.

If those tines are 13 1/2" yep he will go 180, that is what I came up with. I don't see any deductions as all the tines come up from the main beam and a normal (typical)way .deductions come from points coming out the side or bottom or unusual points, Just my opinion tho:D
