Does anyone own a 243 wssm? What do you think of it?

RE: 243 wssm
I have one. Its a Browning abolt. I love it.Iv killed a mule deer buck with it past 350 yards and dropped it in its tracks. It shoot real flat, with a 100 grain bullet it only drops like 10 inches at like 300 yards, with a 50 grain bullet ir drops like 3 inches. Its perfect for deer/antalope,coyotes,varmits.Feel free to ask any questions.

RE: 243 wssm
If you plan on purchasing one I would think twice. There isn't a single rifle manufacturer (aside from a couple AR-15 mfgrs.) that are chambering any of the WSSM's any more. These three cartridges are doomed to disappear.

RE: 243 wssm
I got one a few years back - the A-bolt with a chrome-lined barrel. I call it the "sizzler." It puts the hurt on the deer - never had one go farther than 10 yards after being hit. If you can grab one, get it - a fun gun, no recoiland flat shooting. It will put a hurt on your ears, with a pretty loud report and pretty good muzzle blast.
It's unfortunate that this caliber is not made anymore, but Winchester came out this year with the 100gr XP3. They still make the 100gr powerpoint in thesilverbox, but I think that's about it.If you handload, you're golden, but finding factory loads will be harder and harder in the future. I looked hard at a 6mm/284 before I bought the WSSM. |

RE: 243 wssm
Same can be said about a lot of cartridges like the 250 Savage, 284 Winchester and 300 Savage toname a few. I see the WSSM's falling into obscurity rather quickly like these other fine cartridges. Yes there are still a few loads out therebut good luck trying to find factory ammo for these on the shelf.

RE: 243 wssm
There's always going to be popular rounds vs. best/better, it's a shame they're not one in the same.
I think the wssm's gave a lil extra fps....than their counterparts, i only though the .25wssm provided anything better..... a .223 and .243 are already short cartridges, so not a big advance.....the .25wssm does give you a much shorter .25-06... I would really like to see a 6mm/284 commercially loaded/chambered, maybe this one could stick....but as of not if you want a .243....i think the .243 win is the way to go.... |
RE: 243 wssm
Sorry to derail the tread slightly. I have a 25 wssm. Crunched all the numbers and the 25 was just a whole lot better than the 243 wssm in every respect I could think of. Personally I would not have gotten it if not for the AR. The 25-06 is a whole lot more plentiful. It is a very good cartidge though and has provided a lot of big game for the table. If you are considderering a wssm buy up enough brass to get you through until you get tired of it. I really doubt any of them will be around in 20 or 30 years. There are adequate chambers for no AR platforms that will give you about the same results in a factory chambered rifle with plentiful ammo.
