Head Shots

Would a head shot with a .243 be ethical I am a great shot? Because the last deer I shot alot of the meat was ruined, from the bullet. I sit on top of hay bales so I always have a super steady shot, The ranges vary 50-100-150 yards those are the farthest shots I'd usually take but I try to get under 100 yards. Another reason is I like to keep their whole pelt and I don't like it like when they are holes in it.

You're going to get some yeses and some nos in response to this question. It's been discussed here several times. I've taken head shots on does three times, all inside of fifty yards. At that range, with a scoped rifle, you can pretty much choose which particular hair you'd like to hit. If you are absolutely certain of your shot, I don't see why you shouldn't. A lot of folks have grown up taking head shots on squirrels. I don't see why a target 20 times as large should pose much of a problem.

Where on the head do you aim for a head shot in the ear or eye?

Not to be a wise guy, but if you are such a good shot how did you ruin meat? If you take out both lungs with a broadside shot, or take out lungs and the heart with a frontal shot, no meat should be lost (that is, unless, you like to gnaw on deer ribs).

Just saying..

I love ribs and the bullet demolished the front of them. It wasn't alot of meat ruined I just don't like lead fragments and shards of bone bone in my meat. If I take a head shot it will not ruin any good meat, plus the shots will be close. And it took out the whole heart and the heart is one of my favorite parts of a deer.

If the range is right, and you have the skill, there's absolutely nothing wrong with taking a type of shot that guarantees an instant painless kill.

The deer on our farm let us get pretty close the shot are usually 50 yards in the woods. In the fields it is like 200-300 yards, but I am usually set up close to the woods. With a head shot would between the eyes work?
