What type of deer stand do you use?

Also, what type is best? I am looking to buy one. I will be doing mostly bowhunting. What are advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks

The only options seem to be climber on your poll...

personally, I have lock ons, ladders, & climbers... depends on where I am and what the deer are doing.

I love my Summit Viper SS. It's light, quiet, and real easy to use. Very comfortable too with the foot rest.

I used ladders and lock ons... little iffy with the climbers. I got to get used to them and i'll be fine.

I use mostly ladders any more, but also use hang-on stands and climbers. If I had to only own one I would pick the climber, it gives the most flexibility to move around. The only draw back is you need a fairly straight tree to climb.

I usually sit on a ladder, but I like climbers as well.

If you find good sign you can easily move a climber to that spot rather than taking down andputting aladder stand back up.

I have an Ameristep ladder stand and a SummitUltimate ViperSSclimber. I really like the ladder stand because its easy to get intoand very quiet but if the rut is on then I use the climber so i can move around the woods. Both are extremely comfortable especially the viper, and the viper only weighs 19lbs so it's easy to carry!

Ladder stands make me feel safer as I am connected to the ground. I think they are way easier to set up ( especially by yourself) and get in and out of than a hang on stand. However you lose the mobility you get with a hang on or climber.

4 Lock-ons and 1 ladder stand. Climbers don't work to well here. Too many branches to cut before even being able to try one of those.

I hunt from ground blinds (store bought and homemade), hang on stands, ladder stands and also just climb a tree.

I have a ladder stand and a ground blind. I like them each for different things. the ladder is nice for expanding my field of view while being very comfortable. the ground blind is nice for portability and getting out of the snow or rain.

You need to add Loc-On type option.

I hunt with a climber because of the mobility in the rut season in the rifle season i hunt from blinds from the ground unless visability is poor then i use the climber.

RE: What type of deer stand do you use?

My answer is neither. I have 16 stands on my property, and nine of them are lock ons. Three tripods, two box stands, and two ladders make up the rest.

RE: What type of deer stand do you use?

i killed my biggest deer out of a box stand....but i hunt out of a climber about 95% of the time....if possible, i like to get at least 30 foot high...not only to be hidden, but for scent control...also with a climber, the deer have no idea its there...if you buy a climber, make sure its aluminum, and has cables...quietness is your main objective, followed by comfort and weight..

I only use a stand during bow season, that being said I use a climber, and a few I have built myself as well as ground blinds. I think the climber is the best, it gives me options and I can change location even half way through a hunt if need be! It just leaves me options, and I like that.

I take it that you currently don't own any treestands? If not and you are only buying one I suggest a top notch climber or a light hangon with climbing sticks. You can't beat either for hunting different places IF you are only going to use one. For multiple setups I suggest accumulating several hangons and leave them up in your favorite spots if possible and you won't have them stolen.

RE: What type of deer stand do you use?

I've owned all types.... hang on, climbers, ladders, Every year I sell the old hang ons/climbers remaining and buy new ladder stands, they're all I use.

I'm almost always hunting with my father, so I have another set of hands to move a stand etc..., but once they're in place, they're awesome.

I still own one nice climber, which I never use anymore, because I just put a climber in a new area when thinking of trying a new area, if you dont know where youre gonna hunt etc....a climber is nice for that, but ladders have the most room/comfort out of any stands, period. I like a big platform, big fold up seat, shooting rail.

I hunt mostly out of my Lone Wolf Hand Climber but I also like the Equalizer climber and Millenium hang ons. When I gun hunt I use tower/box stands mostly.

Personally I use both, as well as ground blinds. My buddies and I have a parcel of private land that covers about 600 acres on one side of the street, about 200 acres on the other side and another 400 acres a little further up the road. We set up two stands and one blind each in different areas and have the climbers in the truck for the remote areas. Each one of us knows where the others are set up and switch spots when needed.

I have 2 tripods, 2 double ladder stands, 3 single ladder stands, 6 loc-ons, and 2 climbers. There is a situation for ever type of stand. But i'm leaning alittle more to the ladder stands now bc my wife has started hunting with me and my 7 year old daughter has been hunting with me for the last 2 years so they are alittle more suited for them.

I use a climber most of the time.

RE: What type of deer stand do you use?

Where I hunt, each type has its advantages and disadvantages. My No.1 favorite is the climber. The main drawback is of course hunting areas that do not have a suitable tree in the right place ... or trees at all !!! In my opinion the main advantage is that you can set a climber relatively easily, and then move it as needed in relative short order to take better advantage of the terrain, wind direction and what you have observed. Another plus is that you do not give away your "spots" by leaving a ladder or lock-on in there for someone else to discover and use. Practically every make and model of climber out there now is relatively light weight and rock solid ... and I am about 100% certain everyone comes with a fall restraint system. Maybe not the easiest to use but the "free" ones I have seen appear to be up to the job.

I buy the cheap $30.to$40. dollar hang on stands,They are what I call disposable stands if the always faithful tree stand thief pays you a visit you won't be out of alot of money. You can get these at your local sporting good chain store. They are reliable and you can sit pretty comfortable for long periods of time. I have had some for 3 years now. I hang mine about 30 + feet in the tree and I have no worries about weather they will hold me. You can also get alot more for the same price as a good ladder stand and place them in multiple spots, so you only have to carry your strap on steps in with you.Good luck with whatever you choose.
