I was sitting over a L shaped greenfield watching to my left where the deer usualy come from.
A small spike walked out and stayed for about 45 minutes. I catch something to my right and her he comes down the woodline.
He charged at the spike and ran him off as I was getting my rifle set up. He turned broadside and I put him down.

Here is another pic...

Nice deer. Looks small body wise compared to deer here in Wisconsin. What did he weigh? Is that a big buck down south?? I am not knocking your deer just curious in the difference between northern and southern deer.

RE: Big Bama Buck down

Heck of a buck! There body sizes may differ from up North, but Im sure they are just as hard to hunt! Congrats!

We have dozens of trail cam pics of him during the major part of the rut here. He looked huge body wise with his swolen neck. When I shot him I noticed he looked quite a bit smaller than I thought.

Deer in the south can get on up there but its not like it is up north.

This is a monster in my parts so I'm very proud of him.

You definitely should be proud of him slapout and by no means did I mean to take anything away from your accomplishment. My apology to you if I gave you that impression.

Oh no i didn't.

I understand what you were saying.

This deer weighed between 170 and 180 lbs.

It's the biggest bodied deer that I've shot

How big do they get up there in Wisconsin?

Would living in a swamp help in having a smaller body? Lack of Nutrients and food?

That is what I have came up with so far.

It's not uncommon to see deer well over 200 pounds up here. Some are near or over 200 field dressed. They eat very well up here, especially in the southern part of the state, where a lot of crops and farmland are.

Very nice, is that an old buck or young buck. I know the deer are very different in size compared to the midwest.

RE: Big Bama Buck down

Yeah see down here we have lots of cotton farmers.

There is corn fields but that isn't very good for them anyways. We have nothing like Alfalfa or some of them plants I've seen up north. The closest we have to good crops would be soy beans and not many farmers grow them here.

A 200 lb. deer in my parts of Bama would be huge but I'm sure there are some here.

gspguy73 02-02-2009 05:27 PM

RE: Big Bama Buck down

Well if there is a 200 pounder down there I hope you get a crack at him. You getting the deer from this year mounted??

I was up in Troy Saturday at a friends taxidermy shop and he had just got one in that looked exactly like that buck. Bucks are starting to lose a LOT of weight now in south Bama during the rut and in a month they will be almost skin and bones. I've shot a few 220 pound bucks in Bama earlier in the year than now.
