when setting up a stand i know you should be downwind of the way the deer are going to come. how do you know which way they are going to come?

If t he wind is from the North, set up on the South side of a East-West trail, A west Wind, set up on the East side of a North-South trail. When setting up, just make sure that the wind is blowing in your face when facing the trail. Sometimes you have to adjust accordingly.
If you are hunting in the morning, and there is little wind, setup on the uphill side, in the evening, setup downhill. In the mornings, as things warm up, the breeze will have a tendency to rise, the opposite happens in the evening.
You will have to get busted a couple of times for th is to hit home, and you don' t have to be a novice to get busted in a setup.

1224: Through your scouting, you should know what the deer are useing the trail for. Most likely it leads from feeding to bedding areas. Set according to the direction their heading at a given time of day. Rubs can also be a give away to direction of travel. Most times as a buck walks thru, he approaches a tree from the side he' s comeing from and rubs. Tracks can also show you direction.

nub pretty much hit the nail on the head. You should have some idea which way the deer are moving (on their trails) and where the deer are feeding and where they are bedding. This can be a lot easier said than done. As an example, if you know deer are feeding in a field at night and bedding in a thick swamp in the morning, set up your stand between these points and be sure the wind is blowing in your face when facing the direction you expect to see them traveling.
