When I used factory ammo I loved Hornady 140 gr. SPBT's they would drop deer in their tracks, but you need to shoot whatever your rifle likes just about any bullet will kill a deer with ease.

I like the Winchester Ballistic Tips and Remington Whitetail Pro Core-Lokts.

Deer are not hard to kill. By no means do you need a premium bullet. Winchester Powerpoints or Rem Core Lokts are more then enough

I have to agree with the above statement...

I would agree also. The question I ask is what are you looking for. Shorter shooting heavy bullet with lots of knock down. Longer flatter shooting bullet with not as much knock down. Also a bullet that will do less meat damage or a bullet that with hit hard and put em down. Depends what your looking for. I shoot core locs when driving or sitting in thick areas and such cuz of the brush factor and being able to shoot through it better. If I'm sitting more open areas and fields and marsh I love 130gr Federal Vital shock nosler ballistic tips. Also depends if im out to shoota doe or buck. If all i'm doing is doe hunting I just shoot the 130gr core loc. If i know I'm sitting for a big buck I use the noslers cuz I want that extra knock down. Also shot a bull elk withthe noslers and he only went 15 yrds. Hunched up and stood there and stepped forward couple timesadn tipped over. Put a great hole in him.I've used 90gr hollow pointsI reloaded for shooting coyotes too and have shot two does with them. Dropped the one and the otehr only went 20 yards. WCL

whatever the bullet make sure it is some type of solid core bullet, like the core-loct, so you will get an exit wound. Entrance wounds do not leave good blood trails. I don't like ballistic tips cause they usually shatter on impact killing the deer but no exit wound and no blood trail. really bad when you lose that big buck.

My brother and his son have killed 50 or so with their .270s...They use the Federal Premium Sierra
GameKing SPBT loadings...

Easiest thing to do is pick up a couple of boxes of readily avaliable ammo in your area and give them a try, use what your gun likes...I doubt if any deer will notice a difference from any 130gr .270 bullet...

btw...Those Federal Premiums have gone up to about $27 a box locally...I would be trying the Remington CoreLokts, the Federal Classic in the blue andsilver box and the plain Winchester PowerPoint in the white box, all in 130grs...Most of these run $17-$20 a box currently and they will kill deer as well as a box of $35 bullets...

i've been loading 140gn hornady and seirra bullets in all my 270 rifles for 30yrs. i'm closing in on 200 whitetails killed with these bullets. someone said use a ballistic tip,i've seen more big deer lost due to ballistic tip bullets then any other bullet. if you hit a shoulder blade going in all you get is a 3 legged deer that can still travel miles. i used to load for 3 freinds that used the 140 bt .ALL 3 stopped using them after losing3 of the biggest bucks they had ever shot. i just had another freind tell me last week about a big deer he shot in PA. with a 7mm ultra mag with a BT .he shot it on the shoulder blade on monday,a guy killed it on friday on another farm. it was still walking,on 3 legs.

most of the 270's i've seen will shoot a 140gn bullet better than a 130gn.

srwshooter, you have seen the same thing as I have with the usage of a ballistic tip. A lot of people swear by them, but sooner or later I think they will lose deer due to the break-up of a ballistic tip.

180 grain in a .270? I personally believe the best overall weight is 130 grain. I shootthe Win. ballistic silvertip WSM in my Browning and Hornady Custom 130 grain SP interlock in my Ruger. The 130 grain is great for all ranges, near and far.

RE: Best .270 ammo/ bullet for whitetails?

Best for what?

accuaracy? Depends on your individual rifle. Personally had good luck with hornady interbonds, and federal premium ballistic tips, winchester ballistic silvertip was OK.

price? Remington corelokts are cheap and are very tough bullets, heard good things about federal fusions too .

shoulder shots? Accubond, interbond, any other bond, corelokts and fusions are strong enough for this too. (NO BALLISTIC TIPS)

rib shots? Ballistic tips are very good at this, anybullet will work though.

flat shooting? I like the hornady light mag 130g interbond for this, only looses 33" at 500 yds.(most are 38-42")

I use a Federal premium barnes X bullet for whitetail hunting out west but I don't need to.I am using up the ammunition I have. They are over kill but I do feel like I can reachthe chest cavityfrom about any angle with them. They are not a perfect whitetail bullet.I also often use Remington core lokts, the less expensive version.I have killed many deer with them but I had a negative experience last year (2007) with them.I shot a nice buck at a distance of about 40 yards with a 130 grain core lokt.Broad side shoulder shot and the bullet just exploded, penetration was terrible. It didn't drop the animal and it was necessary to take another shot. The only thing I can think of is fast bullet striking bone, short distance etc..I was shocked and it has taken a bit of my confidence away.

My Brother shoots .270, he uses either Remington Core Lokt or Winchester SuperX Power Points, both in 150gr.

RE: Best .270 ammo/ bullet for whitetails?

This is certainly not any scientific finding by myself or my buddies that shoot our .270 but....
We have all tried many manufactures bullets through our guns and we all shoot different makes (Rem, Wthby, Win., TC).

The four of us have come to the same conclusion, for what ever the reason may be, that the most consistent bullet weight,
by far, has been the 130 grain bullet. We all shoot different 130 grain bullets, but have concluded that the most comfortable weight is 130 grain.
As strange as it may be????

As someone suggested, buy multiple boxes and shoot to determine the best load that YOUR gun likes...

RE: Best .270 ammo/ bullet for whitetails?

150 grain in the Federal Prelium Vitashok. I love them. I used Winchester for a while and saw the number the federal did on two of the deer my buddy shot so I decided to give them a try. Have been very pleased with the results. Haven't lost a deer with them yet (Knock on wood) so I have found no reason to switch. They leave quite a hole and hold together quite well on penetration. The one bullet I have found mushroomed quite nicely and alldeer have left great bloodtrails so I guess my reasoning with using them is, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it!"

ld7009 06-27-2014 07:43 AM

Remington Core Locks or Winchester Power Points Both have been made a Kill Bullit. have been arount for many years. They havent changed anything with exception of different boxes. Proven bullit for many years. Can find anyplace.

140 grain Hornady flattens deer, elk, moose, bear and anything else that I point them at. Not a great bullet at close range though. At Weatherby velocities they do massive damage. They will totally vaporize the lungs liver and heart. I used them in the 270 Winchester, and they performed just fine.
