I saw a tv show on TV (Discovery Channeli think) where a guy taught his dog at a young age to retreive deer sheds. Anybody know if you can really train your dog to do this? How?

I might get a new dog and would like to train it to.

My house dog that is a cairn terrier loves to find sheds, antlers are its favorite toy.

when i was on a bear hunt in may 08" our guides border collie would run out into the woods, and also around the troughs for their cattle, then bring them to the porch of the lodge, where she would lay down a chew on a massive sasketewan shed

There's a guy in WI that has a dvd out on the subject. My dog loves antlers and this will be the first year I take her out.

Did you guys train the dogs in any way to find the sheds? Or did they just kind of start doing it on their own?

Outdoor Life had a 2 part article a year or two ago on how to train your dog to hunt sheds.

My lab finds sheds. I guess it started by me letting him play with a couple of my smaller sheds when he was small puppy. The next spring I took him when I went shed hunting (not thinking he would find a shed) and brought two sheds to me.
