Both great combinations. 7mm-08 is about the most perfect deer caliber I can think of for most people. Doesn't kick near as much as a 30-06, plenty of energy with a 140gr bullet for whitetails. Flat enough for 300yard kills. I just love it.

Given the choice, I prefer something a bit larger but there's no doubt a 7mm-08 is a fine caliber. It's particularly nice for someone that isn't very recoil tolerant. Recoil isn't a big deal to me as I enjoy shooting guns up to a .470NE, but everyone is not the same and it's good to have some excellent alternatives (I bought one for my son when he was younger and now keep the gun for use as my nephews come along and are ready to start hunting).
FWIW, about a dozen years ago I elk hunted in Colorado with a friend that used a 7mm-08 there. I have pretty strong feelings that a caliber of that size does put you at a disadvantage on some shots with an 800 lb animal, but if you are in a position to very shot selective, it can even work well there. BTW, he did take a nice bull.
