For deer the 25-06 gives an edge in SD(secttional density) in the heavier weights....I love the 25-06 though...

25-06 hands down. I will do anything a 243 will do and much more.

The 25.06 is going to have a higher muzzle velocity, but the .243 is a little flatter shooting.
Where do you find data supporting that statement. The Federal and Remington data indicate that the 25-06 is flatter shooting at 500 yards.

If you hit the deer right, it will be dead with either round. Not really enough difference to worry about.

IMO, they are a pretty close in most areas and like said they will both kill deer just as dead... I happen to have both and like the 25-06 better, not because the round is better butmy 25-06is set up different thanmy .243, it'sset up for varmint shooting, it is heavyand shoots sweet!!!!!!!! Great box stand gun, but if I were to behiking a ways to hunt I would not hesitate for one secondto take the .243 out in the woods....

Deer can't tell the difference. .243 Ammo is less expensive, easier to find, and you have alot more choices. I've had great results with the .243.

I have limited experience with the .25-06

i use the .243 and my grandpa using the 25-06 and hes said that he would rather use my .243 because its less recoil and it shoots flatter and knocks deer over. if your looking at shooting deer 200 yards or more i would go with the 25-06 but the .243 is an awesome gun and its an all around gun

I've never shot a .25-06. I like it on paper. However, I have a .243 and love it. Great for deer!

I can't help but wonder where people get the idea that the 243win shoots flatter than the 25-06.Using similar bullets in both, the 25-06 shoots flatter than the 243win.

which is better for deer? maybe the .25-06, but which is a better cartridge? I'd say the .243....

I really don't see a reason to own a .25-06 over a .270win....? I see little/no advantage.

But I do see a reason to own a .243 over a .270...and vice versa....

I'd say get a .270 and/or get a .243.

a .270 kicks hard and im only 13. and no a 25-06 is a better cartridge than a .243

I really don't see a reason to own a 270win at all.The 25-06 does a great job on deer out to 500 yards, and I prefer a larger bore than .277" for elk and moose hunting.

I'd go for the .243.Reason being I have a .280 so this would give me a great varmint round that can also handle deer with less recoil and cost compared to the 25-06.

I am not a fan of either caliber, but both will kill a deer.

only one way to go in my mind 25/06 and i have owned almost everything from a 17rem to a 45/120

I like the 243 better due to cost of ammo, the 25-06 is a good round and will kill farther than the 243,but out to 300yards the 243 will do the same with good shot placement

mcraddock 12-21-2008 04:50 AM

RE: whitch is better a .243 or a 25-06?

.243 is better, but not necesarilly from a balistics standpoint. There is just a wider variety of bullets for .243and ammo is not only cheaper, but easier to find in stores that don't carry a full selection.

RE: whitch is better a .243 or a 25-06?

Really it is hard to say which is better for deer hunting when shot placement is the key to a successful harvest of a deer!!!

RE: whitch is better a .243 or a 25-06?

I just prefer the .243 because is a short action cartridge, cheaper to shoot and kills deer just as dead as the 25-06!

RE: whitch is better a .243 or a 25-06?

Either will do the job just fine. The advantage the 25 has is the ability to shoot 120 gr bullets. That being said my winter project this year is to rebarrel my Czech Mauser to 257 Roberts, haven't decided whether or to to go to the AI though.

RE: whitch is better a .243 or a 25-06?

Just remeber the 25-06 needs a 26"barrell to get those ballistics. If you have one in a 22" barrell knock off about 200fps.
Which one is better ? Not enough difference. Both work well.

my 25-06 is one of my favorite guns. I don't know if I can place it above my .270 though

RE: whitch is better a .243 or a 25-06?

I'm a .243 fan... I like the short action and the milder recoil.

As regards those discussing ballistics... The .25-06 is flatter. Comparing the most likely used bullets, 100 v. 120, the .25-06 is flatter by about an inch and a half out to 500 yards. I'd guess there aren't too many folks here who would notice the difference.

RE: whitch is better a .243 or a 25-06?

"Better" is absolutely subjective in questions such as these. I've owned both calibers, and could never tell that one deer was deader than another, though.

From Hornady:

Caliber- Bullet-Velocity/EneryMuzzle 100 yd. 200 yd300 yd 400 yd 500 yd muzzle, 100,200,300, 400, 500

243 Win 100 gr. BTSP LM InterLock 3100/2133 2861/1817 2634/1541 2419/1299 2213/1087 2018/904 -1.5 1.4 0 -6.4 -18.8 -38.2

Identicle bullets (other than weight) energy at 200 and 300 yards is highlighted for both rounds. It has long been believed that 1200ftlbs of enery is the minimum needed to kill a deer with a modern rifle. I'll take the 25.06's extra 200ftlbs at 300 yards, and be able to kill at 400 over the .243.
As for those people that say a .243 is a flatter shooter... well .4 inches flatter at 500 yards isn't enough to brag about, neither gun should be shooting at anything but targetsor prairie dogs at that range.

Not sure where this "long belief" comes from exactly. I've read 1200 ft lbs minimum for elk. I've read 800-900 ft lbs. for deer. I suspect that it could be done efficiently and humanely with a lot less than that if you're careful about where you put your bullet. I know deer get harvested here in Texasquite regularly using a .223, which only has about 900 ft lbs at 100 yards...

youd be surprised what a .22 hornet does with 45 gr hollow points something like 400 ftlbs at a 100 yds

Dang...I knew someone would start putting tables up here...:D

I've got a stat for you...I've killed at least 175 deer with a .243...Out to 300 yards and frankly most deer hunters don't need to be
shooting deer past 300 yards...(RR excluded...:D)...

If you want a long range bullet for the .243, look at the Federal Premium 85gr HPBT, it starts out at 3300 fps...I've killed about 30 with this and
a couple of buddies have killed another 25 or so...I've also used about 12 factory loadings on deer with this cartridge and they all killed deer...
Some were better for 200 yards and some ran a little further than others, but they all worked and the average hunter won't tell much of a difference...

Go to a gun store and see how many loadings they stock for a .260 or a 25-06...These guys stock what sells...You'll see more .243 rounds avaliable than the other 2 combined...

If you don't handload, this needs to be considered...

25-06 all the way. excellent deer round. the .243is a good deer round too, but deer size game is about its limit. the 25-06 enters the next level with the ability to shoot 115-120 grain bullets. with a premium 115,117, or 120 grain bullet the 25-06 is an adequate round for elk and moose. some people probably disagree but thats just my opinion.
