My new go to mountain rifle.

I have always liked the 35 Whelen, 338-06, and this year carried a 338 Federal in the mountains to put game down fast. My Whelen and 338-06 both have 24" tubes so the 338 Federal got the nod. I like the light .338 bullets for whitetails and typically we have them 200+ lbsaround my hunting area. I've not yet killed one with the .338 Federal (185 gr. TSX), but have killed 12 with the 35 Whelen (200 gr. Rem. core-lokt), and 1 with the 338-06 (180 Nosler BT) and these did the number every time, with only 1 deer running more than 20yds.

I was sitting in the woods enjoying my .338 Federal this year, it groups within .50" 3-shots and it handles so nice in the woods. Then I thought was there any way to make it better and it hit me, why not the .338 RCM with a 20" bbl" shooting 180 gr. Nosler accubonds,185 TSX, or even the old Nosler 180 BT I have plenty of. I also figured with the case capacity I could load it to replicate the velocities I get out of my 338-06 easily. This would allow me to hunt in the mountains, woods and fields with a pretty good package.

So I bought one and added a paint job and a Limbsaver pad.

I Like It!!

I first took the gun apart, including butt pad and swivel studs.

Then I used a cabinet finishing grade sandpaper to rough up the stock so it would accept the paint better.

Next I used Windex to degrease and clean the oil off the stock.

I used 2 coats of Krylon flat camoflauge green with plastic Fusion.(spray )

I allowed it to dry over night and then sprayed it with black Krylon webbing spray until I liked the coverage.

After it dried, I put a spray coat of Krylon matte sealer on it and reassembled.

Thats pretty much it. I had to order the webbing spray and went ahead and got all 4 colors, the rest you can get at Wally World.
