I agree I use to have the mentality of shoot every spike, but no more. Even if a spike doesnt become a booner, he will have at least 6 or 8 points when he's older, and that would make a trophy for a young shooter or first timer or even me.

For me a cull buck is a buck that is old enough for me to have my doubts about it living though the year, altough there aren't too many of those

I have one friend who shoots everything, and everytime he says its a cull. It makes me want to barf.

I hate when they use the term "Cull" on television. You see these ranches on in Texas like on "Bucks of Tecomate" where they shoot beautiful bucks and aren't even happy and all they say is that it is a cull buck like they are disappointed they just shot a deer that would be a trophy to 90% of deer hunters. Makes me sick.

I always find the concept of a "cull" buck amusing. To me, if you are culling an animal it is because it is crippled or sickly.My dad killed a big buck with deformed looking antlers this year, but it turned out that the antlers were deformed by a shotgun slug.

But at the same time, i invented my own term a while back: "sausage buck." I don't give a damn about racks and dontreally like the meat off a"mature" rut swollen buck, so when my dad kills one like that, i just debone the thing and get all the meant made into sausage.

From what I hear....cull bucks I'm assuming are "management bucks" bucks that by 4.5 or 5.5 don't show much potential to be big boys, so they take them out of the breeding population.

Funny thing though, a study I read showed that the majoirty of bucks that are breeding the most are 2.5, 1.5yo, after 2.5 they numbers started to fall off the table, therefore....that buck that's being culled at 4.5...has already passed on his genes to tons of does....

But it was a surprising study since it was have thought that the older bigger bucks would have done the majority of the breeding. With that being said I think you almost need to get those lesser bucks out of there by 3.5....if you can, not sure that taking some 2.5yo as management bucks are possible though since it could just be young/small, not genetically small....

I would try though to in my area if I were managing, pass on those giant 2.5yo....to breed, and take out the lesser ones.
