Anyone take big deer every year?

RE: Anyone take big deer every year?
I've taken a few nice ones over the years. Do I get one every single year? NO! But I've had a string of good luck over the last 18 seasons that have me averaging one per year. Some years two and some years none. Whatever....... it takes TIME, STUDYING deer, PERSISTENCE and PATIENCE. I've taken the deer below on private land, usually small tracts that I've worked hard to gain access.
This years deer.
This years deer.

Some good advice has been mentioned! That's an incredible collection you got there GregH. I could only hope to have half that many deer on the wall one day.Congrads on your deer this year, he is a brute for sure. Any advice to help a young hunter out other than putting the hours in the woods and passing immature deer? Do you run trail cams to help locate big deer? Do you shed hunt?

have found lots of bucks but nothing worth putting on the ground
I get disappointed with all the "Large 7-pointer" topics on this web site. That is a 1.5 year old deer ussually, you should be more proud to take a large doe
But I subscribe to quality deer management. This is a SCIENTIFIC approach to maintaining a healthy deer herd. Within QDMA the harvesting of immature bucks is heavily discouraged.
thats 100% false - horn porn drives big antlers and I can easily prove it ....... if a 180" buck walks by you and its lost its entire right side from the brow tine up would you shoot it ?
be honest - because I'd shoot in a heartbeat
pick up a real bow, a recurve or longbow, and it will change you as a hunter forever, and it will help you rediscover what hunting is all about and it aint filling tags with 130-140 " made up measuring system scoring either

I do shed hunt in the winter and scout while doing it. Post season is the best time to scout because you can see what was going on during the rut by finding rubs, scrapes and preferred trails and bedding areas. I also scout in the summer and walk around the crop fields where they are feeding looking for BIG tracks. I try to figure out where the tracks came from and went to and why. Then I sit in observation stands to see where the deer are coming from when they enter the field. I also keep track of the does and where they're bedding so I can hunt trails that I think a buck will travel when he's checking on the does.
I forgot to mention before, you have to know there are big bucks living where you hunt. You can't kill what isn't there.

In reply to gregh you have a nice collection of mounts, and to kyheadhunter you have to get where there are bigbucks, not every farm holds big deer due to one reason or another,I told a friend several years ago that you cant kill a good deer if there aint one around,so gaining access to good hunting areas is a must to score on a big one nearly every year!!

RE: Anyone take big deer every year?
I usually shoot a good buck annually and would chalk it up to a variety of things with the least important being my own personal hunting skills. Mostly you need to be hunting somewhere that is managed in such a way that the deer are allowed to grow up. I as much look for body size in deciding whether or not take a deer as I do antlers. You've got to let those 3 1/2 year olds walk, which not many hunters seem to do. Look for the fat belly, the swayed back, the Roman nose, ect. Look for a deer version of me....
You'll need to be hunting a place that is either large enough for you to be able to properly manage the herd, or be surrounded by property that has similar objectives as your own.
Of course you need to be out there during rut and you'll need to be able to recognize the habitat that an older buck will like and spend the time there necessary to get him. But most importantly, you need a lot of luck!
