Your splitting hairs on that one....Every single one of those rounds will drop a deer with ease out to 150+.

Its more personal preference. 308 is a great short round for whitetail and the 270 along with the 30-06 are probaly the 2 most popular long rounds for deer hunting and larger game in North America.

308 will be in 30 caliber and have a variety of rounds available for it. I have many friends who use 308 and 7mm08 as their primary deer rifles they get the job done.

Lots of others in our hunting club use 270,243, 25-06 and 30-06 all get deer...

I personally have been using a 270 for whitetailpast 3 seasons and love it. 130gr bullets put em too the floor.

I voted 308 because I love thatcartridge (military days), but in thinking about it I'd possibly with the 270 depending how often you get out to the 300 yard range. It's flatter shooting out to 300 and still delivers plenty of energy on target.

I went with the .308 because you can buy some pretty cheap NON military cartridges for plinking but the biggest reason I like it is because the ammo is everywhere. No matter where I was I figure I can pick up a box of Remington 150g soft pointed corelocs.

I also know that I could confidently use the .308 with the right round for black bear and elk as well.

.270, great deer rifle. Just the right amount of power for a deer.

I love my Savage .308 and won't part with it. The .308's accuracyis legendary. They don't call it the 7.62 NATO round for nothing!

Because you said whitetail deer I would choose the .270

However, if you ever thought about wanting to go for larger animals, like moose or black bear I think .308 might be a better choice.
IMO - They shoot heavier bullets better from the ammo manufactures. ~ I don't reload, so I can't comment on that side of things....
To me and my rifle, I shoot .130 grain bullets and every time I try a heavier bullet I loose accuracy.
So I have half concluded on my own, that a .270 is a 130 grain bullet gun??!!!...

After mentioning this, I would consider bumping up to a .30-06, for the larger game example, plus it's flatter shooting for longer distances

Lastly, any well placed, broad side shot will put any of these animals down without a problem.
Moral of the story... Shoot accurately and smart/ethically!:D

I voted 25-06. It's the perfect little deer caliber, a little hard to find ammo for.
I have a 270, shoulda got a 25-06, because I have to order her preferred ammo anyway[:@].(hmmm, now that I think of it, that ammo isn't available in 25-06)
308 is good too, and could be stretched out way past 300 yds if you ever decide to go deer sniping. easy to find ammo.

i voted 270. but i actually dont own one. my father has owned for as long as i can remember (remington pump). that gun is awsome. the only problem he has ever had was when a buddy of his gave him a couple of boxes of reloads. they jammed liked crazy. i own a 30-06 ruger. very happy with it. would have preffered a 270 but i got a good deal. i also own a rem 308 pump that my sister uses. that gun is awsome. she has shot 5 deer with it. dropped every one in its tracks.

243 Win, 260 Rem and 308 Win do alot of things right. You can't go wrong with this family for alot of hunting. Now, 300 yard Elk, let me introduce you to 308's older brother 300WSM![8D]

That's an easy one, the .270;). I also have a .308, but I prefer the .270. I haven't hunted with my .308 in years. I think I just may have to wipe off the dust and take it to the range. They are all good calibers. It's just a matter of choice. They will all easily kill a deer.

270. Never fired a 25-06. The 308 is a great gun too but just like my 270 the best.

I have each of those calibers and they will all do the job, they will all shoot great and all shoot out to 300yds, the 25-06 is going to have less drop than the other two at that range... My personal favorite is the 25-06 though, no particular reason but one is that my daughter can shoot it as the one I have is a varmint gun and is real heavy thus reducing the recoils for her... This last weekI took a buck, doe and a hog with it andallthree of those animalsdidn't go anywhere.... The week before that the wife took a doe and put her down right there too... Then again, all of those rounds will do that!!!

7mm-08.

270 is my fav. on the list....but for what you suggested I picked the .308, but a 7mm-08 may have been my pick ahead of the .308 had it been on the list.

My personal favorite for deer is the 308 Win. But all 3 would be a good choice.
