Eating road kill! *GASP*

ok, I just gotta ask... I don't know all the legalities or regs, but in most states is it legal/illegal to snatch a freshly car struck deer and salvage what you can?

I ask because a neighbor smoked a young doe and it landed on my property:eek:

Thanks a ton.

I' not sure about the legalities but I know here in VA on the backroads where I live, people do it all the time!!! I never have, but if its fresh...
I dont think I could do it, as it would be in the back of my mind...but I sure would get the tarsal glands if it was rutting off of it..

I personally dont see a problem with it....

in indiana you have to get a road kill permit from the police to make it legal

Thanks for the input....
For those of you that said "no" would that still be the case if you saw it get hit, and the backstraps, and tenderloins were completely unaffected?

*Fresh
*perfect shape
*no witnesses

I wouldn't eat it but...

We were coming back from a hunt one day and saw this HUGE buck killed on the side of the road. Since it is rare that we see one, we decided to go back and look at it. It was a huge 8pt. buck freshly killed, still warm. This was back when the rut was in, I wish I would of thought to cut the tarsals off.

Its legal to take it in Arkansas, but if you havent cleaned a road kill you might be in for a suprise especially if it has massive internal injuries. Whew its a mess.

What's wrong with eating a fresh road kill? The meat is no different than one that is shot. Unless it is hit by a semi, the damage is usually not too bad. Even a deer hit head on will have plenty of good meat left. I think it's a waste if you don't try to salvage some of the meat. If you don't want the meat for yourself, take it to a processor and donate it to feed the needy. I have done that a couple oftimes after hitting deer.
