Slow First Day in Ohio
Well today was the first day of Gun Season in Ohio. I live in Huron county, which is in North Central Ohio about 30 miles from the lake. As of noon today only one deer had been checked in here in our county. The deer just don't seem to be moving around here, how is deer movement in the rest of the state?

RE: Slow First Day in Ohio
Well, I've been out 15 times since November 1, in the mornings and afternoons, and I've seen 5 doe and 1 buck while hunting. TALK ABOUT SOME BAD LUCK!!! today I saw 4 doe. the first 3 were in one group and the wind swirled and they caught my scent, the last one came sprinting through, probably got pushed. I'm becoming quite discouraged.

Well I spent most of the day out in the blowing rain/snow....I saw a total of 0 deer. The neighbor killed a nice 8 point. I hear less than 10 shots fired and the neighbor fired 2 of those.
So yeah pretty slow here too. Jason |
RE: Slow First Day in Ohio
I've hunted the N.W., central/east and southern portion of the state. In the past 4 years the numbers have dropped drasticly to the point that on a recent trip, my brother never saw a deer from his stand. Hunted in Gallia county yesterday, didn't see or hear one deer and this was a place were you couldn't enter without busting deer out of a few years ago.
The trip with my brother was in Coshocton. 4 years ago there were tracks on top of tracks, scrapes and rubs every where. This year there was very little sign of any kind. I don't know what's the reason for the decline. I think the future here in Ohio is dim. Untill the state allows the herd to reach a min. of 750,000 we'll never have a consistent herd. Other states smaller than ours have a good deal more and do just fine. That's my take on it. |

I'm in southern Ohio and during drives today I seen more sign than you could imagine. Scrapes and rubs everywhere. I think there are plenty of deer. One of the guys we are hunting with stayed in a tree all day. Had two drives go through the woods he was in. He watched a yearling doe walk under him during one of the drives and had two of the drivers within 30 yards of her. Plenty of deer around here they are just smart or brave enough to not take off running.

RE: Slow First Day in Ohio
Rory i ended up not being able to hunt this week due to lack of funds. I got an unexpected medical bill in the mail last week that had to be paid so i'm broke. I got some money for my birthday and a friend of mine has gotten a farm to hunt on for the extended gun weekend december 20th and 21st. If i get some more money i might be able to hunt a little this week but i highly doubt it. |
