typical of a texas deer. little tiny body and a huge rack!! nice deer!!! the deer we get our here in missouri are really big bodied if they have antlers like that. my father shot one that was a 11pointer that weighed 300pds!! the meat was tough as hell but still!! i don't see how those texas deer have such small bodies?? does anyone know about this??

Usually the further south you go, the smallerthe body weight. It's all part of genetics. The deer up north have to be big just to survive those cold, nasty winters where the temps can be below zero for weeks at a time with snow measured in feet.

I have seen some of those East Texas deer. (My wife's family is from Lufkin/Huntington/Nacogdoches) and a beautiful racked buck that dresses just under 100 pounds is typical.

Trailrider894,

I've shot a deer in Missouri, too so I know what you're talking about (see above pic). As a rule (there are exceptions)body size increases as you move north. This could be due to habitat, weather, or a combination of factors. However, this deer was smaller than normal -175 is about average, and he was only 150 on the hoof. We're having his jaw double-checked, but we believe he's a 3.5 year old. His rack is not typical for East Texas either (you may be thinking South Texas). Our racks are usually heavy, but narrow. Splits are also very rare.
