What Caliber Do you shoot?
Im A Big guy, I can pretty much handle any caliber rifle. I shoot a Ruger 243. When it comes to deer I dont want the biggest and baddest, I wanna know that my placement of that bullet matters the most.300 Win Mags and 45-70's(although I do use 45-70 single shotfor primitive cause its legal in mississippi)just do to much damage to the animal, and you can just about hit a deer anywhere but in the foot and kill it.

I shoot a Ruger 25-06 Husband shoots a Weatherby 7mm magnum

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
Im fairly tall and while not a big guy, Im not small either. I have a 30/30, 7mm rem mag, and a 300 ultra that I use for hunting. Of those, never scored with the 300 ultra, and have taken a few with the 7mm, and a couple with the 30/30. The little lever doesnt do much for damage, while the 7mm mag does noticeably more. One thing to keep in mind, your choice of bullet design is as much of a factor as caliber. A hard cast lead bullet in a 45/70 probably isnt going to do much damaged compared to a softpoint or hollowpoint, or partition/Aframe versus an accubond etc.
Of the rifles named, the 300 is the most accurate, but I like the 30/30 and 7mm mag the best, and admittedly, the 300 is overkill, lol. |
RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
My caliber of choice for this season has been 6.5x55 Swede in a Blaser R-93 Professional. In case some don't know, the R-93 is a switch barrel gun, and I also have barrels in 22 lr, 308, and 9.3x62.

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
7mm WSM. I also shoot a 12 gauge for the shotgun zone. I shot a 243 for 15 years, great cartridge for deer.

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
I get to hunt the PA rifle season and like my .35 or my newer .308. I have never taken a buck with either of my guns but, missed with my fathers 30/30 and took a nice buck with my brothers .35.
The .308 is dead on and I have all the confidence in the world with it. I do enjoy hunting with the level .35 and 30/30 as both will get the job done in the Poconos! I don;t feel any of these are overkill and <100 yard shots perfect for me. |
RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
This is my 15th season with my trusty 30-06 remington pump. It has puta lot of venison in the freezer in all those years. Three antlerless and one seven pt this year.

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
i shoot a .243 and love it. i think its the best caliber out there for deer.

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
.50 cal encore!

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
I am a .30 caliber fan and have two rifles for two different styles of deer hunting.
Old Marlin 30AS .30-30 with plain iron sights: I use this in the heavy brush, briars, and very heavy woods where I can drop a deer at max 50,60,70 yards. Savage .308 with Bushnell 3-9x40 scope: This is my "go-to" gun and can do everything the ol' .30-30 can't. I use this up on ridgetops, clearings, overlooking an old pasture, etc... where I can drop a deer at 200 yards if need be. |

.270 rem 7600

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
My first few deer were taken with a .30-06. Then switched to a .243 for several years. This year, I'm using a 7mm Rem. Mag. with Remington's Managed Recoil ammo. All Remington 700's. Next year, I'll likely go back to the .243... Or, I just might use an M1A .308 on a buck, and an AR15 .223 on a doe, or two...

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
My go to gun is a Rem. 700 .260. I also have a BAR 30-06 that hasn't seen any action in 4 years. Nothing wrong with the 06 but the .260 is a sweet shooter. Quarter sized groups or less @100yds., low recoil and dead deer.........hard to go back to the BAR. Just bought my son a Rem. 700 7mm-08........jury is still out on it.

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
I shoot a 300 win. mag. and a 6.5x55 swedeish mauser. Overall the best out of the two rly depends on the game and grain bullet ur shooting....i dont reload for the 300 i just shoot the Remington 150gr Core-Lokts. UR rite with it i can hit a deer in the ass and itl die! lol But its very accurate with alot of KE. The 6.5x55 is easily my favorite! I reload for it and im shooting 129 gr Hornady SP and a 140gr Hornady SP. I can outshoot anything in my safe with it! Not quite the fastest or the hardest hitting...but does the job perfectly!

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
I'll just keep my Winchester 30-30,thank you.only deer rifle i own...........and since i hunt here in Pa, it's the best thing to carry to wade through thick brush or set up an ambush on a tree stand.with the 170 grains......i have only had one deer take a hit & move off, only to be shot by another hunter a few yards away. The rest took up space in my freezer!

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
I shoot my .338WM and almost everything. Might be a bit over kill for deer but I can put the bullet were I want. I do have a .270 that I am trying to get dialed in...and will most likely become my deer and antelope gun.

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
All of my past hunting has been with various .50cal muzzleloaders. This year I took my first rifle deer with my Savage 114 .30-06 shooting 150gr Core-loks. It did one heck of a job on the 110-125lb doe that I took with it. Dropped it in it's tracks, but did a lot of meat damage because I hit it a little farther forward and clipped the back 1" of the shoulder roast. Lost about 1/3 of the right shoulder to bloodshot and bullet fragment (the core-lock came apart). I'm saving for a Browning BAR, which will be chambered in .25-06 or .243 Win (probably .25-06). My first choice would be 7mm-08, which the BAR Short-Trac will be chambered in in the spring. I really want the Safari grade which, according to the Browning service rep I talked to at the plant, Browning has no plans to offer the Safari in 7mm-08, just the Short-Trac. I don't have anything against the matte aluminum receiver of the Short-Trac, but I just really have a thing for scroll engraved blued steel and select walnut stocks. Browning blueing is, IMO, the finest of all the factory firearms makers.

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
ppl should start looking at the 6.5x55 swede! Kinda like a 260 rem. but outshoots it by a long shot! The two companies that i think make them the best are HOWA and CZ

ORIGINAL: bigbucks98 ppl should start looking at the 6.5x55 swede! Kinda like a 260 rem. but outshoots it by a long shot! The two companies that i think make them the best are HOWA and CZ Most published load data also keeps the pressure levels way down so as not to risk blowing up the small ring Swedish Mauser 96's. The .260 Rem, on the other hand, runs at typical .308 pressures and is made with the strong, modern actions in mind. My Hornady 6th edition has the 140gr 6.5x55 loads running in the 2500-2600 fps range with a 29" barrel Mauser Model 96, while the .260 Rem data shows all the 140gr loads running in the 2700fps range out of a 24" barrel Remington m700. 5" of barrel makes a significant difference, and I'd estimate that with a 24" bbl, the 6.5x55 would be running at least 150-200fps slower than the published data. Now, that being said, if one handloads, and has a modern bolt action rifle, and is willing to experiment beyond published load data for the Swede, performance can probably exceed the .260 Rem because the 6.5x55's case is a little bigger. But without a good ballistics lab, the amateur handloader does so at their own risk. Mike |

RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
My favorite is a 308 Win. for just about everything and a 7mm Rem. Mag. to cover the rest.
|
RE: What Caliber Do you shoot?
I've killed a couple with a .243, a few with a 12 gauge, but I'm currently carrying a 7 mag...kind of overkill for a whitetail but I love the rifle.
