Rifle suggestion

After 6 years of hunting with my Remington 870 I've decided it's time to buy a rifle. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money so I'm leaning on getting the Savage Model 111; I've heard good things about it. What do you guys think? Also I'm still debating on whether to get a .270 or a .30-06. The gun would be used for deer hunting. Any thoughts??

Marlin xl-7, offered in both 270 and 30-06, cost about $300.

I like my Remington Springfield 742 30.06. Low recoil, good accuracy, and it packs a big punch.

If your truly going to use it for deer only, I'd get the .270 out of the choices you gave us.If I were going whitetail hunting tomorrow, I'd grab my .243. If I were going mule deer hunting tomorrow, I'd grab my .270.

If you start talking about smaller than deer game or larger than deer game, the discussion could go on forever. That's why I own a .243, .270, 30.06, and several more.

I killed my first deer with a 30-06 and my second with a 270-and I was 14 years old... It's all preference really, recoil is slightly more with the 30-06 and has more knock down power. If used for elk the 270 might be a tad light. That being said the 270 still has some balls as yesterday I blew apart a cantaloupe sized hole in a doe who dropped.

I use Gallery of Guns to get an idea on street price vs. MSRP. The Gun Genie function on the site will actually let you put in your zip code and it'll give you quotes from all the gun dealers within the area from your zip that you specify that use Davidson's as their gun distributor. The quotes are exact, so you can actually buy the gun on the site if you want, and they'll drop ship it to the dealer who's quote you accepted for you to pick up there (with all the req'd paperwork, of course). I never actually bought from the site, but one of my favorite dealers is listed, and I know the shop to be top notch.

It's http://www.galleryofguns.com/

With either one you cant go wrong. I dont own a .270, but have 2 06's. I like the 06, but the deer will neve know which one you shot him with. lol

Keep in mind that I have never purchased anything from these sites, just use them as reference. Able ammo is fast and very user friendly.
